Chapter 8

The morning sun broke through the smog of the downtown skyline, casting long, sharp shadows across the concrete canyons of the financial district. Sarah sat at her precinct desk, the heavy paper blueprints from Leo’s briefcase spread out across her blotter. The lines and annotations drawn in faded ink detailed a labyrinth of forgotten subterranean tunnels, abandoned steam pipes, and storm drains that ran directly beneath the city’s largest bullion depository. The red fire hydrant where the confrontation had begun sat precisely above junction point 409—a structural access hatch buried four feet beneath the asphalt.

The internal affairs division had spent the early morning hours trying to pressure Sarah into dropping the misdemeanor assault charges against Julian Vance, citing "higher-level diplomatic sensitivities" and vague instructions from the city attorney's office. But Sarah had refused to sign the release forms, citing the brass emblem and the burglarized apartment as tangible evidence of a much larger criminal conspiracy that extended far beyond a simple parking dispute.

Marcus approached her desk, holding a printed intelligence dossier stamped with the seal of the federal marshals. He dropped it heavily onto the corner of her blotter. "You were right about Julian Vance," Marcus said, keeping his voice low so the desk sergeants nearby couldn't overhear. "His corporate identity is a ghost. The firm he works for, Prometheus Global Logistics, has contracts with the Department of Defense, but intelligence analysts classify them as a private security contractor with a history of executing off-the-books asset recovery missions overseas. They don't just protect vaults—sometimes, they empty them."

Sarah traced the route of the underground steam tunnels on the blueprint with her pen. "They aren't planning a break-in from the front doors, Marcus. They're tunneling up from the old municipal water mains. That's why Julian parked his sedan over that specific fire hydrant yesterday. He was coordinating a subsurface drilling crew working three hundred feet below the street, using the ambient noise of downtown traffic to mask the seismic vibrations."

Marcus pulled up a chair and sat down beside her. "And Leo Cruz? If he figured out their tunneling schematic, he's the only one who knows where their access shaft breaks through into the vault's perimeter."

"Which means Julian’s corporate handlers are hunting for Leo just as desperately as we are," Sarah replied, standing up and reaching for her duty jacket. "If we don't find Leo first, he won't make it to sunrise."
