Chapter 1

The afternoon heat radiated off the asphalt of the downtown street, blurring the edges of the parked vehicles and the neon signs above the storefronts. Officer Sarah Miller stood beside the black-and-white police cruiser, her dark navy uniform crisp, though a thin layer of dust had settled on her boots. Her brown hair was pulled back tightly into a practical bun, keeping stray strands out of her eyes as she addressed the civilian standing before her. A red fire hydrant stood mere inches from the bumper of the man’s vehicle, violating city safety codes and blocking a critical municipal access point.
The man, impeccably dressed in a pristine white dress shirt, white trousers, and polished brown leather shoes, crossed his arms and glared at her. He refused to comply with the directive to relocate his sedan. Sarah maintained her professional composure, her breathing steady, though a muscle feathered in her jaw. She repeated her request with calm authority, her voice carrying clearly over the ambient hum of city traffic. "Move the car, sir," she said, her eyes fixed on his flushed face.
Instead of complying, the man sneered, his sense of entitlement overriding basic civic responsibility. Without warning, he stepped forward and delivered a powerful, malicious shove directly to Sarah’s chest. The suddenness of the kinetic impact caught her entirely off balance. Her boots slipped on the gritty pavement, and she tumbled backward, crashing hard against the unforgiving asphalt. The breath left her lungs in a sharp rush of pain, and a scrape bloomed hot and stinging across her right palm where she braced her fall.

Sprawled on the concrete, Sarah looked up in disbelief as the man loomed over her, his expression twisted with arrogant contempt. "Trash! It's only a few minutes. You don't touch my car," he snarled, spitting out the words like venom.
From the periphery, the heavy boots of another responding unit crunched against the gravel. A male officer, his dark navy uniform identical to Sarah’s, sprinted toward the disturbance. Sarah struggled against the dull ache in her back, pushing herself up onto her elbows. Adrenaline spiked through her veins, sharpening her focus as she pointed a steady hand at the assailant. "Hands off my officer!" she commanded, her voice ringing out with fierce, unbroken resolve as the perimeter began to close in around the hostile street corner.
