Chapter 12

Ascending from the subterranean depths of the storm drain felt like returning from another world. As Sarah, Marcus, and Leo emerged through the rusted iron gate into the pale morning light of the industrial district, the fresh, humid air filled their lungs with a sharp, reviving clarity. Waiting for them in the courtyard were three marked patrol units and an ambulance, their red and blue emergency lights flashing silently against the gray brick walls of the warehouses without the abrasive wail of sirens.

Paramedics rushed forward immediately with wool blankets and medical kits, guiding Leo Cruz toward the back of the ambulance to check him for shock and dehydration. Leo looked back once before climbing into the vehicle, offering Sarah a small, exhausted nod of profound gratitude. Sarah nodded back, her expression softened by the shared ordeal.

The precinct captain arrived shortly after, stepping out of an unmarked sedan with a tight, unreadable expression on his face. He walked straight toward Sarah and Marcus, his eyes flicking down to the battered leather portfolio clutched securely in Sarah’s hands.

"The federal marshals are already securing the downtown financial vault," the captain said, his voice low and measured, carrying the weight of a man navigating a bureaucratic minefield. "Prometheus Global Logistics is officially denying any knowledge of the operation, claiming rogue elements hijacked their corporate identity. But the financial trails and the shell companies in those documents tell a very different story."

Sarah handed the portfolio over to the captain, her fingers brushing against the worn leather for the final time. "Julian Vance and his associates didn't act alone, Captain. They had inside clearances that reached deep into municipal planning and federal procurement. If we stop with the men in the white shirts on the street, this whole thing will just resurface under a different corporate banner next month."

The captain let out a long, heavy sigh, running a hand over his silver-trimmed cap. "We aren't stopping, Officer Miller. The district attorney just authorized a full, independent grand jury investigation into the corporate security contracts tied to that subterranean zone. Your report from yesterday afternoon is what kicked this whole avalanche loose."

Marcus smiled faintly, leaning against the side of the patrol cruiser. "Who would have thought a simple parking infraction in front of a red fire hydrant would bring down a multi-million-dollar corporate conspiracy?"

"It wasn't an accident," Sarah replied quietly, looking down at her right palm where the scrape from the asphalt was slowly beginning to heal into a thin, pink scar. "They thought they could use ordinary city infrastructure as their private highway. They forgot that the officers patrolling these streets actually give a damn about protecting them."
