Chapter 9: The Trap Closes

The news broke across the midday financial networks with the speed of a wildfire. The romantic narrative of a billionaire running away with his maid was instantly rewritten into a lurid tale of corporate corruption, embezzlement, and blackmail. By two o'clock in the afternoon, news vans had multiplied outside Clara and Leo’s apartment building, and local law enforcement had received an anonymous tip regarding potential financial irregularities involving the Miller family estate.

Inside the apartment, Clara sat frozen in front of the television, watching the anchor display the photographs Eleanor had leaked to the press.

"It’s a lie," Clara whispered, her voice hollow as she stared at the screen. "The deposits... I didn't know anything about those deposits. My mother worked herself to the bone; she never had fifty thousand dollars in her life. If there was money in her account, someone else put it there."

Leo slammed his fist against the kitchen counter, rattling the dishes. "They’re framing her, Adrian! Your family is framing my dead mother to destroy Clara and protect their own corrupt board members."

Adrian stood by the window, watching the police cruiser pull up to the curb below. Two officers stepped out, heading toward the building entrance. His jaw was clenched so tight that a muscle throbbed in his cheek. He had anticipated financial retaliation, social ostracization, and public humiliation, but he had underestimated the sheer, ruthless vindictiveness of the Vance family. They weren't just trying to win an argument; they were destroying lives to protect their institutional survival.

"They used my old offshore account numbers," Adrian said quietly, his voice dangerously calm. "Accounts that only Arthur and I had access to before I locked them down last month. Arthur didn't just find those records; he manufactured them."

"That doesn't matter to the district attorney," Marcus said over the speakerphone resting on the small table. The lawyer’s voice sounded tense and urgent. "With the media pressure and the board's political connections, the police will bring Clara in for questioning within the hour. Once she’s in custody, they’ll hold her without bail on suspicion of financial fraud."

"I'm not running," Clara said, standing up from the couch. Her voice was steady, though her hands trembled slightly. "If I run, they win, and they'll use this lie to destroy Leo as well. I have to go down there and answer their questions."

"No, Clara," Adrian caught her by the shoulders, looking deeply into her green eyes. "You don't understand how these interrogation rooms work. Once they get you inside, they'll wear you down until you sign whatever confession they put in front of you to protect me."

"And what choice do we have?" Clara asked, a tear finally escaping and tracking down her cheek. "If you try to protect me, they'll charge you as an accomplice. We're trapped, Adrian."

Before Adrian could answer, a heavy, authoritative pounding echoed against the apartment door.

"Police! Open up!"
