Chapter 11: The Turning Point

The rain began to fall in heavy, relentless sheets as Adrian and Clara stepped out of the police precinct into the glare of the evening news lights. The charges against Clara had been temporarily suspended pending a federal audit of the banking servers, but the media frenzy had only intensified. Umbrellas blocked their path as reporters shouted overlapping questions about corporate corruption, offshore accounts, and the scandalous romance that had triggered the collapse of the Sterling empire.

Adrian kept one arm securely around Clara’s waist, shielding her from the flashing camera bulbs as they pushed through the crowd toward the waiting car where Marcus held the door open. Once inside, the heavy doors slammed shut, cutting off the chaotic noise of the outside world.

Clara slumped back against the leather seat, closing her eyes as she let out a long, shuddering breath. Her hands were still cold, and the adrenaline that had sustained her through the interrogation was rapidly fading, leaving behind a profound, bone-deep exhaustion.

"You didn't have to storm into that precinct like that, Adrian," Clara said softly, not opening her eyes. "You gave them exactly what they wanted—proof that you're personally invested in protecting me. They'll use that to paint you as an unstable liability in front of the judge tomorrow."

"Let them," Adrian replied, taking her cold hand in his and rubbing his thumb gently over her knuckles. "Every move Arthur makes right now is out of panic. He knows the federal prosecutor is auditing the pension funds. The fake bank records were a desperate gamble to deflect attention away from his own embezzlement."

Marcus turned around from the front passenger seat, holding a secure tablet computer. "Adrian is right. The federal judge accepted our emergency injunction an hour ago. The bank servers at Sterling Logistics have been frozen by court order. Arthur Vance cannot touch the corporate accounts or alter any more records."

Clara opened her eyes, looking between the two men. "Does that mean it's over?"

"Not yet," Marcus warned grimly. "Tomorrow morning is the emergency board meeting. Arthur has called a vote to strip Adrian of his remaining voting shares under the morality clause. If they succeed, Adrian will be legally cut off from the family fortune entirely, and the board will control every asset he owns."

Adrian let out a short, humorless laugh. "Let them take the fortune. I never wanted it anyway. All I care about is ensuring that Arthur and his associates answer for what they did to Leo’s family and the hundreds of other workers they cheated."

"It’s not just about the fortune, Adrian," Clara said, her voice dropping to an intense, serious whisper. "If you walk into that boardroom tomorrow empty-handed, they will crush you completely. They'll ruin your reputation permanently, and they'll make sure neither of us can ever walk down the street without looking over our shoulders."

"Then we don't go empty-handed," Adrian said, a fierce, determined light flashing in his eyes. "We go with the one thing Arthur never expected us to find."
