Chapter 13: Dawn in the Boardroom

The executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor of the Sterling Tower was bathed in the pale, cold light of early morning. The massive glass table reflected the gray New York skyline shrouded in low-hanging clouds. Seated around the table were the seven members of the board of directors, their expressions severe and unyielding. At the head of the table sat Arthur Vance, looking impeccably groomed in a dark charcoal suit, his fingers steepened as he stared coldly toward the double doors.

The heavy doors swung open, and Adrian walked in. He was not wearing a tuxedo this time, but a simple, sharp navy blue suit, his posture straight and uncompromised. Beside him walked Clara, wearing a professional dark coat, her head held high. Behind them came Marcus Vance carrying a heavy leather-bound briefcase, followed by two federal marshals in plain clothes.

Arthur’s eyes narrowed immediately, a flicker of genuine unease crossing his features before he forced a cold, patronizing smile.

"Well, Adrian," Arthur said, his voice echoing in the silent room. "I see you’ve brought your legal team and your... companion for your farewell address. Have you come to sign the resignation papers voluntarily, or do we need to invoke the morality clause by formal vote?"

Adrian didn't answer right away. He walked to the center of the room, stopping halfway down the glass table. He placed a heavy, worn leather ledger right in front of Arthur.

"You can save the theatrical speech, Arthur," Adrian said, his voice calm, resonant, and entirely devoid of fear. "The board meeting is officially adjourned under federal investigation."

Arthur scoffed, though his hand twitched slightly as it rested near the ledger. "You brought an old prop from your grandfather's library to intimidate us? This board controls the voting shares, Adrian. You have no legal standing here."

Marcus stepped forward, opening his briefcase and placing certified copies of court injunctions and federal warrants beside the ledger. "Actually, Arthur, Mr. Sterling holds the controlling proxy under the historic preservation trust, which supersedes the board's morality clause in cases of criminal enterprise." Marcus nodded toward the federal marshals. "And these gentlemen are here to execute arrest warrants for corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and pension tampering."

The boardroom erupted into immediate chaos. Board members began shouting over one another, demanding explanations, while two directors hastily stood up to head toward the exit, only to find the marshals blocking the doorway.

Arthur’s face turned the color of ash. He stood up slowly, glaring across the table at Adrian with undisguised venom. "You think you've won something here, boy? You've destroyed the entire company. You've destroyed your own inheritance."

"I destroyed a criminal enterprise built on lies," Adrian replied, his voice unwavering. "And I finally saved myself."
