Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Loft

The sudden movement in the high organ loft sent a fresh wave of panic through the remaining occupants of the cathedral. Nathanael snapped his head upward, squinting against the shafts of sunlight piercing through the stained glass. The balcony was shrouded in heavy oak shadows, but the outline of a tall, thin figure lingered near the brass pipes.
"Who's up there?" Nathanael called out, his voice echoing sharply against the stone walls. He stood up, stepping protectively in front of Lily and the maid.
Officer Miller, who had just returned through the side vestry door, drew his service weapon instinctively and raised it toward the loft. "Police! Identify yourself immediately or we will enter the loft!"
A low, raspy laugh drifted down from the shadows. It was not the voice of a police backup, nor was it someone belonging to the wedding party. It sounded ancient, strained, and utterly mocking.
"You think Eleanor acted alone, Mr. Cross?" a voice drifted down from the darkness. "You think a woman like that has the patience to orchestrate a decade of deceit all by her pretty little self?"
Martha gasped, clutching her dark blazer tightly across her chest as she staggered backward against a mahogany pew. "No... that's impossible. He's dead. We buried him years ago."
Nathanael spun around, staring at Martha with disbelief. "Who are you talking about, Martha? Who is up there?"
Before Martha could answer, the heavy wooden stairs leading up to the organ loft groaned under the weight of someone descending rapidly. Footsteps slapped against the stone floor of the balcony, moving toward the spiral staircase. Officer Miller sprinted toward the side entrance that led to the loft stairs, signaling for Nathanael to stay back with the child.
"Don't move, any of you!" Officer Miller ordered, vanishing into the stairwell.
Nathanael dropped back down to his knees beside Lily, pulling the little girl into a gentle embrace. Her small heart raced against his palm like a trapped bird.
"Uncle Nate, are the bad people coming back?" Lily whispered, her blue eyes shining with unshed tears.
"No, sweetheart. I won't let anyone ever hurt you again. I promise," Nathanael replied, though a cold dread was beginning to pool in his stomach. The revelation that Eleanor might have had an accomplice changed everything.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the stairwell, followed by a muffled scuffle and the harsh sound of swearing. The heavy oak door of the loft stairwell flew open, and Officer Miller stumbled backward into the nave, clutching his shoulder. A dark-hooded figure bolted past him, sprinting directly toward the main exit.
"Stop right there!" Nathanael shouted, adrenaline overriding his better judgment. He lunged forward, tackling the fleeing figure just feet away from the heavy church doors.
The two of them crashed hard against the stone floor, sending white rose petals scattering into the air. Nathanael pinned the intruder’s arms, ripping the heavy hood back to reveal the face beneath.
It wasn't a stranger. It was Julian Vance, Clara’s estranged brother, who was supposed to be serving a ten-year sentence in a maximum-security prison upstate.

Julian grinned maliciously, his lip split and bleeding. "Surprise, Mr. Cross. Your precious bride didn't just lock up my sister—she helped me frame you for embezzlement, and the authorities are walking into your office right now."
