Chapter 1 - The Shattered Vow

The crisp scent of white roses and expensive French perfume filled the grand cathedral, but the atmosphere was suffocating. Nathanael Cross stood frozen in his tailored black tuxedo, the white boutonnière suddenly feeling like a heavy anchor on his chest. Before him stood little Lily, her blonde wavy hair framing a tear-streaked face as she clutched the fabric of his jacket.
"She hurts, mommy, every time you leave," Lily sobbed softly, her blue eyes wide with a terror no child should ever know on what was supposed to be a joyous day.
Nathanael’s breath hitched. He looked down at the child, the physical embodiment of a secret he had foolishly trusted his bride to protect.
Eleanor, stunning in her intricate white lace wedding gown and diamond-encrusted tiara, stepped forward, her face contorting into a mask of pure fury. She crossed her arms tightly over her chest, glaring down at the little girl with undisguised contempt.
"Are you seriously listening to a child, Nathanael?" Eleanor demanded, her voice cutting through the heavy silence of the nave like jagged glass. "This is a pathetic stunt. Someone take this brat away right now!"
"Nathanael, she's telling the truth," Eleanor’s mother, Martha, interjected from the second pew. Martha’s hands trembled against the dark blazer she wore, her eyes dark with a guilt that had evidently tortured her soul for months. "I tried to stop her. I tried to make Eleanor see reason, but she wouldn't listen to me either."
Nathanael’s world tilted on its axis. He looked between Martha’s desperate expression and Eleanor’s defensive, ice-cold glare. The whispers among the wedding guests swelled like a gathering storm.
Before Nathanael could process the swirling vortex of betrayal, a heavy footstep echoed behind the pews. Officer Miller, a seasoned man in a dark police uniform, stepped into the aisle. In his hands, he held a sleek tablet, the screen illuminating his grave expression with a cold blue light.
"Mr. Cross, you need to see this video," Officer Miller said firmly, extending the device toward the groom.
Nathanael reached out with a trembling hand, his eyes locking onto the glowing screen. The footage revealed a dimly lit hallway inside Eleanor’s private estate, showing his glittering bride cornering a terrified Lily in the shadows. The implications struck Nathanael with the force of a physical blow. His face hardened in intense shock and agonizing realization.
"The wedding is over," Nathanael whispered, letting the white rose fall from his lapel to the stone floor.

He turned away from the altar, but as he moved to leave, Officer Miller stepped directly into his path, tapping the screen with a grim expression. "Mr. Cross, you cannot walk away just yet; the footage on this tablet isn’t just about domestic abuse—it’s about a missing person."
