The heavy oak front door upstairs slammed shut, muffled by the thick insulation of the walls as the police began cordoning off the entire property with yellow crime scene tape. Down in the damp cellar, Clara sat on an old wooden stool near the open cell door, her hands resting limply in her lap. Clara’s breath hitched in her throat. "And you know where that ledger is?"
"It's still up there," Sarah whispered, glancing nervously toward the cellar stairs as if expecting Martha to suddenly reappear. "Unless she burned it recently, that cedar chest hasn't been opened since the day I disappeared. If the police search the yard without the ledger, they'll just dig random holes and find nothing. She planted landscaping stones over the real graves years ago."
