Chapter 1 - The Shattered Porcelain

The sharp clatter of ceramic breaking against the polished mahogany dining table pierced the quiet afternoon air, followed immediately by the golden splash of hot chicken soup soaking into the linen runner. Clara stood frozen, her dark wavy hair framing a face pale with shock. She wore a light blue button-down shirt that now bore a dark, steaming stain across the chest. Her chest heaved with shallow, rapid breaths as she stared down at the ruined lunch.

"Ah!" Clara gasped, stumbling backward against the edge of the sideboard.

Her hand flew to the left side of her head, where a few strands of dark hair had been violently yanked just seconds before. Standing beside her was Martha, a sixty-year-old woman with short grey hair and a maroon cardigan layered over a yellow collared shirt. Martha’s hand was still hovering dangerously close to Clara’s crown, her fingers curled into a rigid claw.

Before Clara could catch her breath, David stepped forward, his thirty-five-year-old frame rigid with sudden rage. He wore a dark grey Henley shirt that stretched across his tense shoulders as he planted himself between his wife and his mother.

"Mom! What are you doing?" David shouted, his voice cracking with a mixture of disbelief and fury.

Clara hovered just behind David’s right shoulder, pulling her light blue shirt tighter around herself. She looked visibly shaken, her eyes wide and defensive as she stared past her husband at the older woman who had just assaulted her in their own dining room.

"You pulled my hair," Clara said, her voice trembling slightly as she tried to regain her composure.

David didn't wait for his mother to offer an excuse or an apology. He crossed his arms tightly over his chest, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. He turned his furious gaze entirely upon Martha, refusing to let the matter slide.

"You pulled her hair," David repeated, his tone dropping into a dangerous, icy register that left no room for argument.

In the background, sitting quietly at the far end of the dining table, was Arthur. The sixty-five-year-old man wore a light blue button-down shirt that matched Clara’s, his grey hair neatly combed. He sat motionless amidst the chaos, staring straight ahead at a bowl of untouched soup, a glass of water, and a small plate of crackers. He didn't flinch, nor did he look up at the shouting match unfolding around him.

David turned his head slightly toward the seated elder, his expression darkening with a terrible realization that had been building for months.

"Dad, how many times did she hit you?" David asked.

May you like

Arthur slowly lifted his head, his cloudy eyes meeting his son's gaze, and whispered something that made Clara gasp aloud.
