Chapter 10 - The Garden of Bones

The ominous words hung in the damp cellar air like the tolling of a funeral bell. David slowly raised his head, his eyes locking onto his mother with a terrifying, blank intensity. The grief of losing his father was instantly eclipsed by a sudden, sickening dread at what Martha had just implied.
"What did you just say?" David asked, his voice dangerously quiet as he pushed himself up from the concrete floor. He stood over Martha, towering above her in the dim light, his dark grey Henley shirt stained with dust and sweat. "What did you bury in the backyard?"
Martha didn't flinch. She stood her ground, her chin tilted upward with an arrogant defiance that made Clara’s stomach churn.
"Ask him," Martha said, nodding her head slightly toward Arthur’s lifeless body on the floor. "He helped me dig the holes. Every single one of them. You always thought the neighbors' children just ran away when they vanished back in the nineties, didn't you? You thought it was just a cursed town."
Sarah let out a harsh, broken laugh from where she knelt beside her father. She pulled her tattered denim jacket tighter around her frail shoulders, her eyes burning with a venomous hatred. "She’s not lying, David. Mother always had a habit of collecting things... and burying the ones that didn't fit into her perfect little suburban picture."
Clara stood up slowly, her hands trembling as she wiped the dust from her light blue button-down shirt. She looked at Martha, realizing with absolute horror that the woman standing before her wasn't just a cruel mother who had locked her daughter away; she was a serial predator who had hidden in plain sight for decades.
"We need to call the police right now," Clara said, reaching into her pocket for her phone. "Maya must have called them by now. They're going to search every inch of this property."
Before Clara could pull her phone out, the sound of distant sirens began to wail through the afternoon air, growing louder and sharper with every passing second. Flashing red and blue lights painted the small basement windows in flickering hues of crimson and cobalt.
Martha’s expression finally flickered, a brief flash of genuine panic crossing her features before she quickly masked it behind a cold sneer. "Let them come," Martha whispered, stepping past David toward the stairs. "By the time they dig up the garden, your father won't be around to take the blame anymore. And I'll simply tell them Sarah came back after all these years and went on a rampage."
"You're not going anywhere," David growled, grabbing his mother firmly by the shoulder and spinning her back around. He shoved her against the concrete wall with enough force to rattle her teeth. "You're staying right here until the authorities walk through that front door."
Upstairs, the heavy pounding of boots echoed through the hallway, followed by loud, authoritative voices calling out.
"Police department! Open up!"
Maya’s voice could be heard crying out from the top of the stairs, directing the officers toward the basement door. A moment later, the heavy wooden door at the top of the stairwell swung wide open, flooding the dim cellar with harsh, natural daylight.
Two police officers in full uniform rushed down the steps, their hands resting cautiously on the holstered weapons at their sides. The lead officer, a stern-faced woman with her blonde hair pulled back in a tight bun, swept her gaze across the chaotic scene: Arthur’s lifeless body on the floor, Sarah standing emaciated and broken near her old cell, David holding Martha against the wall, and Clara standing pale and trembling nearby.
"Freeze! Nobody move!" the officer shouted, drawing her weapon as she scanned the room. "Drop your hands and step away from each other right now!"
David slowly released his grip on Martha, raising his hands in the air as he backed away from her. Martha, taking advantage of the momentary confusion, suddenly let out a piercing, theatrical scream, dropped to her knees, and pointed a trembling finger directly at her son.

"Officer, thank god you're here!" Martha wailed, tears instantly flooding her eyes as she played the helpless victim to perfection. "My son... my son just killed my husband in a fit of rage, and he's been holding me hostage down here with that crazy woman!"
