Chapter 4 - Total Darkness

The sudden blackout was absolute, erasing the concrete walls, the storage boxes, and the terrifying figure in the crawlspace. Arthur’s hands groped frantically in the blackness until his fingers brushed against the cold metal casing of his flashlight. He clicked the power button once, twice, three times. Nothing happened. The batteries hadn't died; something had drained them instantly.

"Arthur!" Clara’s voice cut through the dark, sounding much closer than before. A pair of warm, trembling hands grabbed his shoulders, pulling him backward out of the crawlspace opening. "Keep your voice down. Do not engage with it."

"The flashlight... it just died," Arthur breathed heavily, his heart slamming against his ribs. He could feel Clara’s breath coming in short, panicked gasps against his neck.

"I told you this house was built on top of things that don't stay dead," Clara whispered fiercely into his ear. "We bought this place because it was cheap, Arthur. Because the previous owners vanished without a trace, and we thought we got a bargain."

"You knew?" Arthur stiffened, pulling away slightly so he could try to find her face in the pitch black. "You knew about this before we moved in?"

"I found the journals in the attic after we signed the papers," Clara admitted, her voice cracking with suppressed guilt. "Notes from the family who lived here in the nineties. They heard scratching too. They tried to seal the vents. But the house remembers what happened here, Arthur. It feeds on the things we left behind."

"We need to get Lily out of this house right now," Arthur said, his protective instincts overriding his shock. He grabbed Clara’s hand, feeling the cold sweat on her skin. "We’ll pack the car. We’ll go to a motel."

"We can't leave," Clara whispered, her grip tightening until her nails bit into his palm. "Look behind you."

Arthur turned his head toward the dark basement stairs. Standing at the bottom, silhouetted against the faint ambient light seeping down from the hallway above, was a small figure in a blue vintage dress.

"Lily?" Arthur called out, his voice filled with sudden dread. "Lily, what are you doing down here? You're supposed to be upstairs with your mother."

The figure at the stairs didn't answer. It tilted its head, exactly the way the child in the crawlspace had done just moments before.

"Arthur," Clara whispered, her voice dropping to a terrifying register. "That isn't Lily."

A soft pattering of bare feet echoed from the top of the basement stairs behind the silhouette, followed by the sound of a little girl's voice calling out from the hallway above.
