Chapter 14 - The Final Trade

Arthur fell through the empty space, the rushing wind roaring in his ears like a freight train. The impact with the concrete floor of the catacomb should have broken every bone in his body, but instead, he landed softly, as if stepping onto a thick carpet of moss.

The cavern was vast, stretching out into endless darkness in every direction. Thousands of small, pale faces peered out from the shadows along the brick walls—every person, every child whose home had been foreclosed, whose life had been erased by the bureaucratic machinery Arthur had served for decades.

Lily was standing a few feet away, holding her woolen doll tightly against her chest. She looked at him with innocent wonder.

"Hi, Daddy," Lily said softly. "Are we playing hide and seek?"

"We're going home, sweetheart," Arthur said, scooping his daughter up into his arms and holding her tight against his chest. He buried his face in her long brown hair, breathing in the scent of shampoo and sunshine.

"You can't take her," the tall shadow in the tattered suit murmured, stepping out from the darkness to block the path toward the stone stairs leading upward. "The trade requires a soul of equal value. A child for a child. A father for a father."

"Take mine," Arthur said without hesitation, stepping forward to shield Lily with his body. "I am the one who signed the papers. I am the one who left the boy in the closet. I am the debt."

The shadow towered over him, the glowing red eyes burning with an intense, supernatural heat. The air around them began to crackle with static electricity, and the distant sound of sirens—or perhaps screaming—echoed from the edges of the underground chamber.

"Arthur!"

He looked up toward the gaping hole in the ceiling high above. Clara’s face appeared in the light, framed by the jagged wooden planks. She was holding a heavy rope she had hastily tied to a structural beam in the hallway.

"Catch the rope!" Clara screamed down, throwing the coiled end into the abyss.

The heavy hempen rope plummeted through the air, landing directly across Arthur’s shoulders. Without a second thought, Arthur grabbed Lily, looped the rope securely around her waist, and tied a secure knot with hands that didn't shake.

"Pull her up, Clara!" Arthur roared, looking up toward the light.

"I'm not leaving you down here!" Clara shouted back, tears streaming down her face.

"You have to! For Lily!" Arthur yelled, his voice cracking with emotion. He shoved the rope upward with all his strength. "Pull her up now!"

The rope grew taut, and Lily’s small form began to rise smoothly toward the ceiling, lifted by Clara’s desperate, frantic strength.

"Daddy!" Lily cried out, reaching a small hand down into the dark. "Don't leave me!"

"I'll always be with you, sweetheart," Arthur whispered, watching as his daughter vanished through the hole into the light above.

The tall shadow in the suit stepped closer, its cold, smoky fingers wrapping around Arthur’s throat. "The trade is complete," the entity hissed. "Welcome home, Arthur."
