Chapter 11 - The Exchange

Lily took two small steps forward, her blue vintage dress swaying softly around her knees. She blinked sleepily, completely unaware of the terrifying apparition standing just a few feet away from her father.

"Lily, stop!" Arthur roared, lunging forward to grab his daughter, but the grey-skinned girl in the yellow dress moved with impossible, supernatural speed.

In a blur of motion, the apparition crossed the hallway and stood directly in front of Lily, blocking her path. Lily stopped instantly, her eyes widening in wonder rather than fear as she looked up at the strange little girl.

"You have a pretty dress," Lily said innocently, tilting her head.

"Your dress will look better on me when you're down in the dark," the apparition whispered, its voice echoing with a hollow metallic ring.

Clara screamed, rushing down the hall with a heavy wooden framed photograph snatched from the living room wall. She hurled it at the apparition, but the frame passed straight through the grey figure as if it were made of smoke, shattering harmlessly against the opposite wall.

"Get away from her!" Clara shrieked, throwing herself between Lily and the entity, pulling her daughter into a tight embrace.

The apparition didn't attack. Instead, it turned its head slowly toward Arthur, a sickening grin stretching across its grey face.

"The house is balanced, Arthur," the entity whispered, its voice sounding like multiple people speaking at once. "Two children were locked away. Two children must remain. One goes down, one stays up. The trade is fair."

"No trades," Arthur said, standing up slowly. His initial terror had burned away, replaced by a cold, resolute despair. He stepped between his family and the entity, squaring his shoulders. "Take me. I signed the papers. I sealed the doors. Leave my wife and daughter alone."

Clara gasped, grabbing the back of Arthur’s blue suit jacket. "Arthur, don't be a fool! You can't bargain with a demon!"

"It’s not a demon, Clara," Arthur said quietly, not looking back at her. "It’s consequence. I built my career on ignoring the people buried beneath the system. This house just made the math literal."

The entity in the yellow dress tilted its head, studying Arthur with dark, unblinking eyes. For a long moment, the hallway was completely silent, save for the ticking of the grandfather clock.

"You are too old, Arthur," the entity said softly. "Old meat doesn't keep the foundation warm. We need someone pure. Someone who hasn't learned how to lie yet."

Before Arthur could react, the floor beneath Lily’s feet suddenly splintered open with a deafening crack, plunging the little girl into a pitch-black cavity.
