Chapter 8 - The Red and Blue Lights

The wailing sirens echoed sharply against the quiet suburban night, casting flashing red and blue geometric patterns across the garage walls. The intruder froze dead in his tracks, his head snapping toward the sealed overhead garage doors as the sound of heavy vehicle engines idling in the driveway filled the air.
"Damn it," the man muttered under his breath, realizing his window of opportunity had slammed shut.
Without another word, the intruder spun around on his heel, bolted back through the open basement fire door, and slammed it shut behind him with a heavy thud.
Elena stood frozen in the center of the garage, the heavy brass poker still gripped tightly in her shaking hands, her chest heaving as adrenaline coursed through her bloodstream. The federal marshals must have realized something was missing or triggered an alert from their remote monitoring systems.
A loud, authoritative voice boomed through a loudspeaker from the driveway outside.
"Federal law enforcement! Step away from the premises with your hands visible!"
The automated keypad on the garage wall beeped loudly, and the heavy metal overhead door began to slowly grind upward, flooding the garage with the blinding, harsh glare of multiple police cruiser headlights.
Elena shielded her eyes with her free hand, stepping back as Marcus Vance—the lead federal investigator—stepped into the garage, flanked by two armed tactical agents with their weapons drawn. Marcus lowered his weapon immediately upon seeing Elena standing alone, disheveled and holding a metal rod.
"Mrs. Vance? Are you alright?" Marcus asked, stepping forward quickly. "We received a secondary security breach alert on your property system. We turned back as soon as we saw the perimeter sensors trip."
"He was just here," Elena said breathlessly, her voice cracking as she lowered the poker. "An intruder. He came through the service entrance. He was looking for Julian's files... the medical records."
Marcus’s expression hardened instantly. He signaled to the tactical agents behind him, who immediately rushed toward the basement fire door and the rear exit, weapons raised.
"Secure the perimeter! Check the lower level and the grounds!" Marcus ordered sharply, before turning his full attention back to Elena. "Mrs. Vance, what medical records are you talking about?"
"Julian didn't just embezzle charity funds," Elena said, her voice dropping to a trembling whisper as the full weight of the night’s horrors settled over her shoulders. "He killed my father. He poisoned him slowly over months to take control of the entire estate. And the man who was just in this garage... he was Julian’s partner in the medical cover-up."
Marcus stared at her in stunned silence for a long moment, the color draining from his face as he processed the revelation.
"We need to get you and your daughter out of this house immediately," Marcus said firmly, taking her arm to guide her out of the garage. "This is much bigger than corporate fraud. You are in mortal danger."
As Marcus led her back into the main hallway of the mansion, Mrs. Gable rushed down the grand staircase, looking pale and terrified.

"Mrs. Vance! Thank God you're safe," Mrs. Gable cried out, wringing her hands nervously. "I came down because I heard the commotion, but... but when I went to check on Lily in her bedroom... she's gone."
