Chapter 6 - The Man in the Shadows

Elena pressed her back deeper against the cold pantry wall, her heart hammering frantically against her ribs. The man in the kitchen didn't move immediately; he stood motionless in the dim light, his scarred profile silhouetted against the open safe. He tilted his head slightly, listening intently to the absolute silence of the mansion.

He knows someone is here, Elena thought, her fingers gripping the wooden edge of the pantry door for support.

With agonizing slowness, the intruder stepped away from the safe, holding the sealed manila envelope bearing her name in one gloved hand. He began to walk directly toward the pantry entrance. The floorboards beneath his heavy boots groaned softly, each step sounding like a gunshot in the quiet house.

Elena’s eyes darted frantically around the cramped pantry for an escape route. There was no back door here—only the service hatch leading down to the dark, unfinished basement. Without a second thought, she slipped her fingers through the iron ring of the hatch door, pulling it upward just as the pantry door handle began to turn.

The hatch groaned in protest, making a sharp metallic squeak as it lifted open. Elena didn't hesitate; she dropped quickly into the pitch-black opening, pulling the heavy iron door down until it clicked softly into place just as the pantry light clicked on.

Crouching on the concrete steps of the basement, Elena held her breath. Through the tiny ventilation slats in the iron hatch above, she could see the beam of a high-powered tactical flashlight sweeping across the pantry floor.

"I know you're down there, Mrs. Vance," a gravelly, unfamiliar voice hissed softly through the floorboards. "You can hide in the dark all you want, but that book your husband left upstairs is missing a few pages. And I intend to collect them before the federal marshals come back to sweep the property."

Elena bit her lower lip so hard she tasted copper. The man didn't just want Julian's hidden assets; he wanted the medical records—the proof regarding her father’s death. He knew she had found the leather notebook on the dining table.

Footsteps echoed heavily in the pantry directly above her head, followed by the sound of drawers being pulled open and shelves being ransacked. The intruder was searching for the rest of the evidence, systematically tearing through the service quarters.

Elena knew she couldn't stay trapped in the basement indefinitely. It was a dead end with no windows to the outside. She had to move quietly through the old coal cellar toward the secondary utility stairs that led up to the garage.

As she took her first step down onto the damp concrete floor of the cellar, her shoe crunched softly against a pile of discarded debris.

Above her, the footsteps in the pantry stopped instantly. A heavy boot struck the iron hatch door with a violent thud, and the harsh voice barked down into the darkness.

"I heard that, Elena. Come out now, and nobody gets hurt—not even the little girl upstairs."
