Chapter 11 - The Ticking Clock

The video on the tablet screen looped silently, showing little Lily’s terrified expression as the scarred hand swung the silver pocket watch back and forth. Elena reached out with trembling fingers, touching the screen as if she could somehow pull her daughter out of the digital frame.
"Where was this recorded?" Elena demanded, looking up at Marcus with wild, desperate eyes. "What road is that? What car?"
"Our cyber-crimes unit is running traffic camera analysis right now," Marcus replied rapidly, tapping the screen to bring up telemetry data. "The interior of the vehicle matches an older model utility van, and the background noise indicates they're heading toward the old industrial shipping yards near the abandoned municipal harbor on the edge of the city."
Julian slumped back in his metal chair, burying his face in his cuffed hands as he groaned in despair. "The harbor warehouses... Viktor keeps a storage facility down there for smuggled goods. If they take her inside those shipping containers, we'll never find her in time."
Elena stood up so abruptly her metal chair screeched loudly against the concrete floor. She turned her fierce, tear-filled gaze onto Julian one last time, all remaining pity completely burned away.
"If she doesn't come back alive, Julian," Elena whispered, her voice carrying a terrifying, absolute promise, "I will personally make sure you spend every remaining second of your miserable life wishing you were dead."
Without waiting for his response, Elena turned on her heel and strode out of the interrogation room, Marcus Vance following close behind her stride for stride.
"We're mobilizing a tactical unit right now," Marcus said as they hurried down the brightly lit corridor toward the precinct exit. "We'll surround the harbor warehouses within twenty minutes. But Elena, you cannot come with us. It's an active hostage extraction zone. It's far too dangerous."
"Try and stop me," Elena said coldly, not breaking her stride as she pushed open the heavy glass doors into the cool night air where a federal SUV was already idling with its engine revving.
They climbed into the back of the vehicle, and the driver slammed the accelerator down, tires squealing as they rocketed out of the precinct parking lot and surged into the empty lanes of the midnight highway. The city lights blurred past in a streaking cascade of neon and shadow, matching the frantic, chaotic rhythm of Elena’s racing thoughts.
As the SUV hurtling through the darkness approached the industrial outskirts of the city, the tall, rusting cranes of the abandoned municipal harbor loomed ahead against the dark skyline like skeletal giants.
Marcus clicked his radio, speaking in low, clipped tones to the tactical teams converging from the opposite side of the access road.
"All units, approach with extreme caution. We have visual confirmation of the target vehicle parked outside Warehouse 12," Marcus ordered into the mic.
The SUV slowed to a halt behind a row of rusted shipping containers fifty yards away from the dilapidated brick structure. Elena peered through the frosted window of the vehicle, her heart pounding violently in her chest.
Inside Warehouse 12, a single overhead work light cast a dim, sickly yellow glow through the grimy windows, illuminating the shadowy silhouette of two figures standing near a stack of wooden crates.
And right beside them, tied to a wooden chair, was a small, motionless figure in a cream-colored sweater.
"Lily," Elena gasped, reaching for the door handle before the vehicle had even come to a complete stop.
Marcus grabbed her arm firmly, holding her back. "Wait, Elena! Look at the perimeter. There's someone else standing in the shadows behind them."
May you like
Elena squinted through the windshield, her breath catching in her throat as a second figure stepped out from the darkness of the stacked containers, holding a heavy iron wrench and smiling coldly right toward their vehicle's headlights.
