Chapter 3

Clara’s calculated collapse drew Julian’s attention away in an instant. He knelt beside the woman in the red satin dress, his strong hands gently supporting her shoulders with a display of protective chivalry that made Maya’s stomach churn. The domestic theater was playing out exactly as Clara had scripted it, positioning Maya as the ruthless aggressor and Clara as the fragile casualty.

"She’s fainting," Clara murmured weakly, burying her face in the expensive fabric of Julian’s lapel. "The stress... Julian, make her stop."

Maya stood over them, her arms crossed tightly over her chest to keep her body from shaking apart. The betrayal wasn't just about Clara; it was about the systemic erosion of truth within the walls of this house. For months, Maya had tracked the missing assets, tracing the deliberate financial bleeding of the family estate straight to offshore accounts tied to Clara’s maiden name. She had gathered the physical ledger, hiding it beneath the loose floorboards of the East Wing library, believing that proof would instantly shatter Julian’s blind loyalty.

Instead, she stood here, isolated and condemned without a trial.

"You're playing right into her hands," Maya said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, steady whisper. "When the audit hits tomorrow morning, and the accounts are drained to zero, remember who tried to warn you."

Julian looked up over Clara’s blonde head, his dark eyes flashing with a sudden, sharp intensity. The mention of the audit clearly struck a nerve, though his expression remained tightly controlled. He stood up slowly, keeping Clara steady with one hand while facing Maya with an expression of quiet warning.

"The audit is handled," Julian said evenly. "And your fabricated stories about Clara’s financial dealings are becoming tiresome, Maya. If you have documentation, present it through proper channels. Stop staging hallway tantrums."

"Proper channels?" Maya let out a bitter scoff. "How can I use proper channels when the man running the compliance department is sleeping with the primary beneficiary of the fraud?"

The accusation hung in the air like a physical presence. Clara gasped softly, pressing a manicured hand to her chest, while Julian’s face hardened into a mask of pure granite. The temperature in the grand hallway seemed to drop ten degrees.

"That is a serious accusation," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a chilling authority that demanded submission. "You need to understand the consequences of baseless slander."

"It’s not baseless," Maya retorted, taking a step forward despite the warning bells screaming in her head. "I have the duplicate keys to the safe. I have the wire transfer receipts from the Zurich branch. It's all real, Julian."

Julian stared at her for a long, agonizing moment, his mind clearly calculating the risks behind her words. For a second, just a fraction of a second, doubt flickered in the depths of his dark eyes.

Then, Clara groaned softly, pulling Julian’s focus right back to her theatrical distress.

"My head," Clara whispered, fluttering her eyelashes open. "Julian, please, don't listen to her lies anymore. Just get her away from me."

Julian nodded grimly, looking back at Maya with a finalized verdict written all over his features.

"Go to your quarters, Maya. Now. Or security will escort you."

Maya held her ground, staring past Julian toward the heavy antique grandfather clock ticking relentlessly in the corner. It was nearly midnight. The safe deposit box downtown was set to open at dawn, and she had the only key.
