Chapter 1

The sharp sting of the hallway’s fluorescent lights burned against Maya’s tear-swollen eyes, but the pain inside her chest was infinitely worse. Her fingers, clutching the stiff fabric of her white button-down shirt, trembled with a violent, consuming fury that she could no longer suppress. Standing in the cavernous, marble-floored corridor of the family estate, she felt her entire world fracturing into jagged, irreparable pieces.

Across the expansive floor, Clara stood trapped near the grand staircase, drowning in a sea of crimson satin. Her blonde hair fell in disarray around her tear-streaked face, and her desperate cries echoed hollowly off the ancient stone walls. The sound grated against Maya’s raw nerves, amplifying a betrayal so profound it felt like a physical blow.

"Help!" Clara sobbed again, her voice cracking with a manufactured helplessness that made Maya's stomach turn.

Maya’s breath came in ragged, burning gasps. The sheer hypocrisy radiating from the staircase triggered a white-hot explosion of defiance within her. She planted her feet firmly on the polished marble, her dark hair pinned back tightly from her sweating forehead, and unleashed a defiant roar that shook the very silence of the house.

"No!" Maya screamed, her voice breaking through the heavy air with raw, unbridled agony.

She pushed off the floor, running frantically across the endless expanse of the hallway. Her black skirt swirled around her ankles as she closed the distance toward the stairs. Every stride felt like running through deep water, heavy with the weight of years of deception.

Reaching the base of the staircase, Maya pointed an accusing, trembling finger straight at Clara’s tear-stained face. The fury boiling in her veins eclipsed any sense of self-preservation or propriety.

"You’re lying!" Maya yelled accusingly, her voice dripping with a mixture of hatred and profound heartbreak.

Clara flinched, shrinking back against the wrought-iron banister as if physically struck by the truth in Maya’s words.

Before Clara could muster a defense, the heavy oak doors at the end of the hallway clicked open. Heavy, measured footsteps echoed against the stone, cutting through the heated confrontation like a blade.

Maya spun around, her breath catching violently in her throat as she saw Julian standing there. His dark suit was immaculate, completely untouched by the chaos consuming them, but his expression was chillingly serious.

The air vanished from the room as Julian’s cold, assessing eyes locked onto Maya’s tear-filled face.
