Chapter 4 - Midnight Confrontation

The sound of designer heels clicking sharply against the marble foyer echoed through the quiet mansion. Clara froze in the dimly lit hallway outside the master suite, the pearl still clutched tightly in her sweaty palm. Downstairs, she heard the low, authoritative rumble of the husband’s voice greeting his wife, a greeting devoid of any usual affection or warmth. The temperature in the house seemed to drop twenty degrees instantly.
Madam’s voice floated up the stairwell, smooth and dripping with fabricated sweetness. "Darling, you're still awake? You should have gone to bed hours ago. The charity gala ran so late, I am completely exhausted."
"Save it," the husband’s voice cut through her honeyed words like a razor blade. There was no shouting, just a terrifying, surgical coldness. "Come into the dining room. We need to talk."
Clara held her breath, pressing her back against the wallpaper of the hallway as she heard Madam’s footsteps pause. A brief, tense silence followed, the kind of silence that precedes a violent storm. Madam must have sensed the shift in the atmosphere immediately; her footsteps resumed, moving away from the stairs and toward the back of the house. Clara risked a cautious peek over the mahogany banister, watching as Madam glided into the dining room, her white robe wrapping elegantly around her slender frame, her long straight black hair cascading down her back.
Inside the dining room, the husband remained seated at the head of the long table. He hadn't touched his wine since Clara left. Right in the center of the white tablecloth, illuminated by the harsh glow of the overhead chandelier, lay the crumpled blister pack of contraceptive pills.
Madam stopped dead in her tracks. The easy, radiant smile vanished from her face in a fraction of a second, replaced by a flash of genuine panic that she tried desperately to mask beneath her usual armor of arrogance. She straightened her posture, lifting her chin with an air of haughty disbelief.
"What is the meaning of this childish display?" Madam asked, her voice steady, though a slight tremor betrayed her composure. "Are you sorting through my personal trash now? Have you lost your mind?"
"No, Victoria," the husband replied, using her given name for the first time in months. He stood up slowly, towering over her with a menacing calm. "I haven't lost my mind. I've finally found it. You've been lying to my face for three years. Three years of crying about infertility, while you secretly swallowed these every single morning."
"Where did you get that?" Madam hissed, her eyes darting frantically around the room before landing on the doorway where Clara was hidden. A sudden, venomous realization hit her. "That wretched maid. You’ve been listening to the help over your own wife."
"Leave Clara out of this!" the husband roared, slamming his fist onto the table with a force that made the crystal glasses rattle. "Look me in the eye and tell me these aren't yours. Tell me you haven't been actively deceiving me while I prayed for a child!"
Madam stared at him, her chest heaving beneath her white silk robe. The mask had completely shattered, revealing a cold, calculating stranger. She stepped closer to the table, her voice dropping to a harsh, venomous whisper.

"You want an heir?" Madam laughed bitterly, a sound devoid of any humor. "You think I'm going to ruin my body, my freedom, and my lifestyle just to satisfy your pathetic ego and your family’s obsession with a bloodline?"
