Chapter 11 - The Surveillance Trap

The words hit Clara like a physical blow. The color drained from her face, leaving her swaying on her feet as the full gravity of the situation collapsed around her.
"Footage?" Clara whispered, her voice failing her. "What... what footage?"
"The master suite has a private, motion-activated security camera hidden inside the custom bookshelf, installed by Mr. Harrison months ago to monitor valuable jewelry," Vance explained, turning back from the door with a grim expression. "He didn't even remember it was there until his security team accessed the cloud storage this morning. It captured everything, Clara. Every second of you kneeling by the wastebasket, pulling out the blister pack, and sliding it into your apron pocket."
Clara dropped onto the edge of the bed, burying her face in her hands. The trap had closed from both sides. On one hand, Madam was threatening her mother’s life if she cooperated with the lawsuit. On the other hand, the husband’s legal team now possessed indisputable video proof that placed Clara directly at the scene of the discovery, making her perjury transparent and legally perilous. She was trapped in the crossfire of a brutal war between two powerful, ruthless adversaries who cared nothing for the collateral damage they left in their wake.
"She threatened my mother," Clara sobbed quietly, the emotional dam finally breaking. "She sent a picture of my mother at the grocery store. If I sign your affidavit, if I testify against her, she’ll hurt my family. I had to lie. I had no choice."
Vance’s expression softened instantly. The cold, corporate lawyer demeanor melted away, replaced by genuine human empathy. He walked back across the room, pulling a chair up close to the bed and sitting down so he was at eye level with the terrified young maid.
"Listen to me, Clara," Vance said, his tone firm, reassuring, and completely steady. "Mr. Harrison cares about justice, but above all, he cares about human life. He is not going to let anyone harm your mother. The moment you walked out of that mansion, he doubled his private security detail. There are already two trained professionals stationed outside your mother’s home in her small town, monitoring every single entrance and exit. She is completely safe."
Clara lifted her head, her tear-filled eyes searching the lawyer's face for any sign of deception. "Are you... are you certain?"
"I give you my professional and personal word," Vance affirmed, pulling a secure satellite phone from his pocket. "In fact, let’s prove it right now."
He dialed a quick three-digit extension, spoke in hushed tones for a few moments, and then handed the screen to Clara. She pressed the device to her ear, holding her breath.
"Hello, sweetheart?" her mother’s warm, familiar voice crackled through the speaker, completely calm and cheerful. "Are you doing alright in the city? Some very nice men in a black car just dropped off a fresh basket of groceries and said they were friends of your employer, offering to help around the house. Everything is so peaceful here."
Tears streamed freely down Clara’s cheeks as a massive weight lifted from her chest. "I'm fine, Mom. Just... checking in. I love you."
"Love you too, honey. Call me later."
Clara handed the phone back to Vance, her hands no longer shaking. The fear that had paralyzed her moments before evaporated, replaced by a cold, resolute clarity. The blackmail had failed. The leverage was gone.
"Give me the pen, Mr. Vance," Clara said, her voice steady and determined.
May you like
Vance smiled, sliding the leather portfolio back open and handing her the heavy fountain pen. Clara leaned over the desk and signed her name with absolute, unyielding conviction across the dotted line.
