Chapter 10 - The Ultimatum

The digital clock on the hotel nightstand glowed balefully, reading 1:15 PM. Clara sat rigidly on the edge of the queen-sized bed, staring at the blank television screen across the room. Her mind was a chaotic storm of fear, guilt, and raw survival instinct. The threat against her mother echoed endlessly in her skull. Every time she closed her eyes, she envisioned her elderly mother walking through that small-town grocery store, completely unaware that a cold-blooded sociopath had marked her as leverage.
A sharp knock at the hotel room door shattered the suffocating silence.
Clara froze, her heart leaping into her throat. She didn't move, holding her breath as the knock repeated, slightly louder this time.
"Clara? Open up. It’s me, Marcus," a familiar voice called out through the heavy wooden door. It was the husband’s chief legal counsel, a man she had briefly met during her employment at the estate.
Slowly, Clara stood up and crept toward the door. She checked the peephole, seeing the tall, sharp-suited lawyer standing alone in the hallway, looking impatient and all business. She undid the deadbolt, unlatched the safety chain, and pulled the door open just enough to create a barrier.
"Mr. Vance," Clara said, her voice tight and strained. "What are you doing here?"
The lawyer pushed the door open gently, stepping past her into the room without waiting for an invitation. He pulled a leather portfolio from under his arm and placed it neatly on the small desk by the window.
"The divorce proceedings are moving faster than anticipated, Clara," Vance said, turning to face her with a sharp, professional gaze. "Mr. Harrison has filed the formal petition based on fraud, emotional distress, and deliberate deception. We have your preliminary statement regarding the contraceptive pill packs and the timeline of her lies. I need you to sign the formal affidavit right now so we can submit it before the afternoon court docket closes."
He opened the leather portfolio, revealing a stack of crisp legal documents covered in dense paragraphs and a yellow sticky note pointing directly to the signature line.
Clara stared at the papers as if they were covered in venom. Just an hour ago, Madam’s chilling threat had echoed through this very room. Signing this document meant giving the husband the ammunition he needed to destroy Madam completely, but it also meant signing her own mother’s death warrant. Yet, refusing to sign meant succumbing to blackmail and letting a remorseless liar walk away victorious while destroying an innocent man.
"I can't sign this, Mr. Vance," Clara whispered, stepping back and shaking her head.
The lawyer paused, his pen hovering mid-air. He looked up, his professional facade cracking into genuine confusion. "What do you mean you can't sign? You gave us the evidence yourself. You told Mr. Harrison the complete truth yesterday. Why are you backing down now?"
"I made a mistake," Clara lied, forcing her voice to remain steady despite the violent shaking in her hands. "I was angry about being let go. The pills... they weren't what I thought they were. I found a regular vitamin supplement bottle, and my imagination ran wild. I lied. I want nothing to do with this lawsuit."
Vance narrowed his eyes, studying her face with the practiced skepticism of a veteran trial attorney. He took a slow step closer, lowering his voice. "Clara, look at me. Someone got to you, didn't they? Victoria Harrison is a dangerous, desperate woman, but Mr. Harrison and I can protect you. If you lie on a legal affidavit, you are committing perjury, and you are playing right into her hands."
"Nobody got to me," Clara insisted, her voice breaking slightly as she pointed toward the door. "Please, just leave. I'm retracting my statement. Leave me alone."
Vance sighed heavily, packing his portfolio back up with deliberate slowness. He walked toward the door, pausing with his hand on the brass knob to deliver a final, chilling warning.

"You're making a terrible mistake, Clara," Vance said quietly. "Because Mr. Harrison just received an anonymous package delivered to his temporary office ten minutes ago—containing security footage of you pulling those exact pills out of the master suite trash bin."
