Chapter 8: The Ghost in the Security Room

Guided by Dr. Harrison, the small, uneasy group made their way up from the basement archives to the hospital’s central security command center on the third floor. The room was dark, illuminated only by the cool, bluish glow of a dozen high-definition monitors displaying various hallways, stairwells, and exits across the sprawling medical complex.
A weary-looking security technician named Miller—no relation to David—pushed himself back from the main console as the group entered.
"You wanted to see the footage from the north wing between midnight and three AM?" the technician asked, adjusting his headset. "I’ve isolated the relevant camera angles, but you’re not going to like what you see."
"Just play it," Chloe urged, stepping up to the edge of the console, her hands gripping the metal railing.
The technician pressed a key on his keyboard. On the central monitor, the hallway of the maternity ward flickered to life. The timestamp in the corner read 01:14 AM. The corridor was quiet, bathed in the dim amber glow of night-mode lighting. For several minutes, nothing happened. Then, the heavy fire doors at the end of the hallway swung open silently.
A figure wearing standard hospital scrubs and a surgical mask walked into view. They pushed an empty utility cart with practiced ease, moving with a familiarity that suggested they worked within the building every single day.
"Stop right there. Enhance that frame," David commanded, pointing a trembling finger at the screen.
The technician tapped a sequence of keys, zooming in on the figure's hands as they passed beneath the overhead light. Visible on the individual's left wrist was a gold wedding band with a distinct, intricate engraving of ivy leaves.
Nurse Marcus gasped audibly, stepping back from the console. "That ring... I know that ring."
"Whose is it?" Sarah demanded, turning to face the nurse with fierce urgency.
"Dr. Vance," Nurse Marcus whispered, her face draining of all color. "Not Chloe—Dr. Robert Vance. He’s one of our senior pediatric surgeons. He was on call that exact night."

Chloe stepped back as if she had been physically struck, her hands flying to her mouth. "That's impossible. Robert is... he's my husband's brother. He's my uncle by marriage."
The security room fell into a stunned, suffocating silence. The implications of the footage hung in the air like poison. This was no random administrative error, and it wasn't an external criminal enterprise. It was an inside job, orchestrated by a senior member of the hospital’s own medical staff, executed with chilling precision within the very halls meant to protect new life.
