Chapter 11: The Confrontation in the Cabin

The brass handle turned with a faint, oiled click that felt deafeningly loud in the quiet woods. David pushed the heavy wooden door open, stepping directly into the warm, dimly lit living room. Chloe slipped in right behind him, followed closely by Sarah, who carried the sleeping Leo over to a nearby armchair, leaving him safely tucked away from the immediate danger.
Dr. Robert Vance spun around, clutching the infant tightly to his chest. His eyes widened in sheer disbelief as he stared at the intruders standing in his living room. For a agonizing second, no one spoke. The only sound in the room was the soft, rhythmic ticking of a grandfather clock in the corner.
"Robert," Chloe whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of betrayal and fury. "What have you done?"
Dr. Vance lowered his chin, a bitter, exhausted smile touching the corners of his mouth. He didn't look like a violent criminal; he looked like a broken man standing at the edge of an abyss. "You shouldn't have come here, Chloe. This doesn't concern you."
"It concerns us both!" Sarah shouted, stepping forward before David could hold her back. Her eyes burned with a fiery maternal wrath. "That is my daughter in your arms. Hand her over right now, or God help me, I will tear you apart."
"Stop, Mrs. Miller. Please," Dr. Vance said, holding up a free hand in a defensive gesture. He didn't attempt to reach for a weapon. Instead, he gently rocked the infant, whose crying had subsided into soft, rhythmic breathing against his shoulder. "I didn't do this out of malice. I swear to you, I didn't want to hurt anyone."
"You switched our babies in the middle of the night!" David roared, taking a threatening step forward, his fists clenched at his sides. "You altered the hospital records, you bypassed security, and you kidnapped a newborn baby! Don't talk to me about not wanting to hurt anyone!"
"I had to," Dr. Vance replied, his voice cracking with sudden, overwhelming emotion. He looked down at the baby in his arms with an expression of profound, agonizing sorrow. "My wife and I... we lost our child three weeks ago. A late-term miscarriage. The grief was destroying her. She stopped eating, she stopped speaking. The doctors said she was slipping into irreversible catatonia."

The suffocating anger in the room shifted slightly, replaced by a heavy, complicated wave of human tragedy. Chloe stared at her brother-in-law, her hands shaking. "That still doesn't give you the right to steal someone else's child, Robert. You broke the law. You destroyed two families to fix your own."
"I know," Dr. Vance wept openly now, tears streaming down his cheeks as he pressed his forehead gently against the infant’s soft hair. "I know I crossed a line that can never be uncrossed. But when I saw these two babies born within minutes of each other... I thought I could make an invisible trade. I thought no one would ever have to know."
