Chapter 5: The Investigation Begins

The arrival of Dr. Harrison, the head of obstetrics, brought a tense, clinical gravity to the room. He was a tall man in his fifties with prematurely gray hair and a tired expression that spoke of decades dealing with human tragedy. He closed the door completely, ensuring privacy before addressing the devastated parents.

"Mr. and Mrs. Miller, I want to assure you that the hospital is taking full responsibility for this catastrophic administrative failure," Dr. Harrison said, his voice measured and calm. "We have locked down all exits. No newborns have left the building. The security footage from the hallway and the nursery is currently being reviewed by our chief of security."

Sarah lifted her head, her red-rimmed eyes fixing the doctor with a fierce, burning intensity. "Talk is worthless right now, Doctor. Someone walked into my room, took my child, and left another woman's baby in her place. That isn't just a administrative error. That is a crime."

"We are treating it with the utmost seriousness," Dr. Harrison replied, nodding slowly. "The other mother, Chloe Vance, has been brought to a private consultation room on this floor. She is as distraught as you are. Her baby was born twenty minutes before yours in Delivery Room B."

David stood up, towering over the doctor. "Bring her here. I want to talk to her face-to-face. I want to know how her baby ended up in our care."

"Mr. Miller, that might not be advisable right now," Nurse Marcus cautioned, stepping between the two men. "Emotions are running high. Confronting each other without moderation could lead to further distress."

"My son knew before any of you did," David said, his voice rising as he pointed toward Leo, who was quietly drawing shapes on the edge of the mattress with his finger. "An eight-year-old child walked out of that room and instantly recognized that the baby in that bassinet did not belong to our family. What does that say about your security protocols, Doctor?"

Dr. Harrison swallowed hard, unable to meet David’s accusing gaze. "Your son’s intuition is remarkable, Mr. Miller. But right now, we need cooperation, not recrimination. If we can trace the exact timeline of the shift change between midnight and two in the morning, we can pinpoint where the physical swap took place."

Just then, a soft knock sounded at the door. A security officer pushed it open just enough to hand Nurse Marcus a small tablet device. "We checked the elevator security logs," the officer reported quickly. "The young woman, Chloe Vance, didn't leave the building. She got off at the basement level near the records archive, looking for the administrative office."

Sarah wiped her face with the sleeve of her gown. "She’s looking for answers, just like we are. David, we need to go down there. I am not sitting in this bed while strangers decide where my daughter is."
