Chapter 3: Fractured Foundations

Once the sound of Julian’s door clicking shut reached the kitchen, Clara turned her gaze fully onto Arthur. The fury from earlier had curdled into something much colder, a detached analytical curiosity that chilled Arthur to the bone. She slid a single manila folder across the table toward him. The tab read Vance, Arthur - Confidential.
"I was looking for the property tax receipts for the accountant," Clara said quietly, her voice devoid of inflection. "The key you left behind the basement fuse box didn't fit the desk drawer. So I used the screwdriver. The drywall gave way easier than you think."
Arthur swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper. "Clara, please. Let me explain the context. It’s not what it looks like."
"Not what it looks like?" A dry, humorless laugh escaped her lips. "Arthur, you aren't Arthur Vance. The real Arthur Vance died in a motorcycle accident in Oregon twelve years ago. You bought his social security number off the dark web when your hedge fund went under and the federal indictments started dropping. Who are you really? Or should I just call you by whatever ghost name you used before you crawled into this suburban house and played suburban dad?"
Arthur closed his eyes for a brief moment, the exhaustion of maintaining the facade finally crushing his spirit. "My name is Julian. Julian Mercer. And I didn't steal money, Clara. I blew the whistle on my firm’s illegal short-selling schemes. They framed me for the embezzlement. They had bought judges, regulators, and federal investigators. If I stayed in the system, I would have spent thirty years in a maximum-security prison for crimes my bosses committed. I ran to protect myself. When I met you... I fell in love. I didn't mean to drag you into this. I thought I had buried the past deep enough."
Clara stared at him, her eyes searching his face for any sign of deception, finding only a pathetic, exhausted truth. "You dragged us all in the moment you signed our marriage license with a dead man's pen, Arthur—or whatever your name is. Do you know what happens when the government finds out? They don't care about your noble whistleblowing. They care about fraud. They can seize this house, freeze the accounts, and put the boys into state custody while they sort out our identities."

"They won't find out," Arthur insisted, leaning forward, his hands flat on the table. "I have a contingency plan. I’ve always had one. We can pack up tonight. We go off the grid, start fresh somewhere across the border—"
"No!" Clara slammed her hand on the table, causing Leo to stir slightly in his sleep. She lowered her voice to a fierce, trembling hiss. "No more running. I am not living my life as a fugitive, and I am certainly not letting my sons grow up looking over their shoulders because their father was a coward who couldn't face a courtroom."
