Chapter 14: Confrontation at the Station

The man in the trench coat lunged forward with surprising speed, grabbing Clara by the arm before she could reach the highway curb. She twisted and kicked, fighting with the feral desperation of a mother protecting her children, but he overpowered her effortlessly, dragging her toward the open door of the sedan.
"Save your energy, Mrs. Mercer," he muttered coldly, shoving her into the back seat. "You’ve caused quite enough trouble for one lifetime."
As the car door slammed shut and the sedan sped off into the highway traffic, Clara stared out the rear window, praying silently that Julian and Leo would remain hidden in the railway depot long enough for federal backup to arrive. The data release sequence she had triggered at the payphone would take precisely three minutes to ripple through global servers—meaning every law enforcement agency in North America and Europe was currently receiving the unredacted files implicating the syndicate.
Within ninety seconds of the sedan entering the interstate, the radio scanner on the dashboard crackled to life with frantic dispatcher chatter. All units, all units. Priority broadcast from Department of Justice and Interpol. Multiple raids authorized on financial hubs in Zurich and Chicago. Suspects identified.
The driver cursed in a foreign language, slamming his foot down on the accelerator. But it was already too late. Ahead of them, flashing red and blue lights illuminated the night sky as three federal cruisers formed an impenetrable roadblock across all four lanes of the highway. The sedan skidded to a halt against the concrete divider, surrounded instantly by armed agents with weapons drawn.

"Out of the vehicle! Hands on your head!" the amplified voice of Agent Miller echoed through the night air.
The doors were wrenched open from the outside. Strong hands pulled the driver out onto the pavement, while another agent carefully helped Clara out of the back seat, offering a steadying hand and a reassuring nod. "Mrs. Mercer? You’re safe now. The files hit our servers five minutes ago. Your husband is being released from the federal holding facility as we speak."
