Chapter 11: Calculated Risks

Before the man in the trench coat could take another step toward the children, Julian lunged forward with surprising ferocity, grabbing a heavy ceramic umbrella stand by the door and tipping it over directly into the intruder’s path. Heavy metal canes and umbrellas spilled across the hardwood floor, tripping the man up just enough to break his forward momentum.

"Run!" Julian screamed at the top of his lungs, grabbing his toddler brother by the arm and dragging him toward the kitchen back door that led out to the overgrown backyard.

"Julian, no!" Clara yelled, but her maternal instinct kicked in instantly. She didn't hesitate. She grabbed the heavy brass paperweight from the entry table and hurled it with all her might straight at the intruder as he scrambled to regain his footing. The heavy metal struck him squarely in the shoulder, causing him to grunt in pain and stumble backward against the wall.

Clara didn't wait to see if he recovered. She sprinted after her boys into the kitchen, slamming the heavy wooden back door shut and throwing the iron slide-bolt into place just as a heavy, violent crash echoed against the wood from the other side. The intruder was throwing his weight against the door, trying to splinter the aging frame.

"Through the gate! Head for the woods!" Clara ordered, grabbing Leo into her arms while holding Julian’s hand in a death grip.

They burst out into the overgrown suburban backyard, scrambling over the low wooden fence that separated their property from the dense municipal greenbelt behind the subdivision. Brambles and wild blackberry bushes tore at Clara’s jeans and scratched Julian’s bare legs, but they didn't stop. They plunged deep into the thick underbrush, the towering pine trees and dense foliage offering immediate, natural concealment from the house.

crouching behind a massive fallen oak log, Clara pulled both boys tightly against her chest, holding her hand over Julian’s mouth to muffle his ragged breathing. Through the spaces between the thick tree trunks, they could see the back patio of their house. A moment later, the kitchen back door splintered open with a loud crack of breaking wood. The man in the trench coat stepped out onto the concrete patio, scanning the treeline with cold, methodical precision, holding a small, suppressed pistol in his right hand.

Julian’s eyes went wide with absolute terror as he stared at the weapon. Clara squeezed her eyes shut, whispering a silent, desperate prayer that the dense forest would swallow them whole before the man decided to search the woods.
