Chapter 7 - The Twenty Million Dollar Alibi

The damp wind whipped across Pier 44, scattering a few loose pages from the manila folder across the slick concrete. Clara ignored the chill, dropping to her knees despite the fine white lace of her wedding dress soaking into the grimy puddles. Her fingers scraped against the cold paper until she found page four. The document wasn't a bank statement or a love letter; it was a heavily redacted coroner’s report from a hit-and-run accident that had occurred on a winding coastal highway outside Boston exactly five years to the day.
"Read the names, Clara," Victoria whispered, stepping closer, her silhouette cutting sharply through the rolling fog. "Read the name of the driver registered in the police report."
Clara’s eyes scanned the fine print, her breath catching in her throat as the letters formed a name she knew intimately. Julian Vance.
"No," Clara murmured, shaking her head violently as denial washed over her. "This isn't possible. Julian was in Europe that year. He told me he was studying architecture in Zurich."
"Julian was in Zurich for three months after his father bought the local police department and buried the investigation," Victoria said, her voice dropping into a harsh, metallic whisper. "That car didn't hit a guardrail, Clara. It hit a family sedan carrying my younger sister and her husband. They died instantly. Their six-year-old child survived with permanent injuries."
Clara stared up at Victoria, the horrifying pieces of the puzzle violently snapping together into a grotesque picture. "And the hush money... the twenty million dollars your family received..."
"Was blood money paid to keep Julian out of a prison cell," Victoria finished for her, her eyes flashing with a cold, unforgiving fire. "Julian’s father threatened to ruin my remaining family if we didn't sign the nondisclosure agreements and vanish overseas. They thought they had successfully bought our silence forever. But they forgot one simple rule: money can erase a crime on paper, but it cannot wash the stain off a guilty conscience."
"And that is why you came back," Clara said, slowly pushing herself up from the wet concrete, her posture straightening despite the exhaustion pulling at her limbs. "Not to win Julian back. Not to ruin my wedding out of jealousy. You used my wedding as the ultimate stage to expose the Vance family to every federal agency watching from the audience."
"Your father’s firm audits international shipping lines, Clara," Victoria said smoothly, pulling a small silver flash drive from the pocket of her trench coat. "Julian thought he was using your family’s corporate infrastructure to launder his offshore accounts. Instead, he unknowingly granted my forensic team full backend access to every single ledger the Vances own."
Before Clara could reply, the heavy thrum of approaching helicopter blades suddenly tore through the quiet night air above the harbor. A blinding beam of white searchlight cut through the fog, sweeping across the rusted hull of the ferry and illuminating the entire pier in stark, clinical detail.
"What is that?" Clara yelled over the deafening roar of the engine, shielding her eyes from the glare.

"That," Victoria said, offering a sharp, triumphant smile as she held up the silver flash drive, "is the federal indictment arriving right on schedule. And look who brought it."
