Chapter 3 - The Cold Corridor

The corridor outside the Grand Belmont ballroom offered no sanctuary, only a long, dimly lit stretch of polished mahogany and velvet wallpaper that seemed to mock Clara’s hurried footsteps. The heavy lace train of her wedding dress dragged heavily behind her, catching on the ornate brass floor grates, but she refused to stop or look back. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird, each beat a sharp reminder of the betrayal she had just uncovered.
At the end of the hall, near the service elevators, a familiar figure stood leaning against the wall. The hotel staff member—the 25-year-old woman with dark hair pulled back into a neat bun and wearing a sharp black blazer—was tapping calmly on the screen of her smartphone. She did not look surprised to see Clara rushing toward her; rather, she wore the quiet, composed expression of someone watching the final domino fall precisely as planned.
"You knew," Clara said, her voice trembling with a mixture of exhaustion and fury as she came to a halt a few feet away. "From the very beginning, when you handed me that box in the lobby, you knew what was inside."
The hotel employee lowered her phone, slipping it into the pocket of her blazer with deliberate slowness. She met Clara’s gaze with steady, unwavering eyes. "I knew that you deserved the truth before you walked down that aisle, Mrs. Vance. Or should I still call you Miss Montgomery?"
"Do not play games with me," Clara snapped, stepping closer, her hands clenched into white-knuckled fists at her sides. "Who are you working for? Is this Richard’s doing? Are you part of some sick extortion ring?"
"My name is Maya," the woman replied smoothly, her voice completely devoid of panic. "And I work for nobody in this hotel. I work for Victoria."
The name hung in the dense air of the hallway like a physical blow. Clara staggered back slightly, the lace of her dress rustling against the floral carpet. "Victoria? But Victoria is in London. Or at least, that is what Julian swore up and down until five minutes ago."
"Victoria was in London until yesterday morning," Maya corrected gently, stepping away from the wall. "She landed at JFK at dawn. And right now, she is sitting in a private lounge at the airport, watching the live stream of this magnificent wedding broadcasted on a secure feed."
Clara stared at Maya, her mind struggling to connect the pieces of a puzzle that had just exploded in her face. "A live stream? Why would Victoria care about watching her faithless ex-husband marry someone else? Unless... unless this entire wedding was a setup from the very beginning."
"It was not a setup, Clara. It was an exposure," Maya said, her dark eyes softening with a flicker of genuine sympathy. "Julian never intended to cut ties with Victoria. Her family holds the majority shares in Vance Enterprises. Julian needed your father’s cash injection to save the company from bankruptcy, but he needed Victoria’s signature to access the offshore trust. He planned to divorce you within six months on fabricated grounds."
"Six months," Clara echoed, the horror settling deep into her bones, chilling her blood far more than the air conditioning ever could. "He looked me in the eyes this morning while we were taking photographs and swore he loved me."
"Men like Julian love power and survival," Maya said, checking her watch. "The car is waiting outside the service exit. It will take you away from the paparazzi currently gathering at the main entrance."
"And where are you going, Maya?" Clara asked, noticing the way the young woman was buttoning her blazer and adjusting her collar.
May you like
Maya offered a faint, cryptic smile. "My shift at the Grand Belmont ended ten minutes ago. My flight to London leaves in two hours."
