Chapter 5 - The Glove Compartment

The interior of the black sedan smelled faintly of expensive leather and rain. As the car pulled smoothly away from the loading dock of the Grand Belmont, plunging into the neon-lit maze of downtown traffic, Clara sat in rigid silence. Her white lace wedding dress pooled around her feet like sea foam, a stark reminder of the ceremony that had burned to the ground less than an hour ago.

Remembering Maya's final words, Clara leaned forward from the back seat. Her fingers fumbled slightly with the latch of the glove compartment before it clicked open, dropping a thick manila folder onto her lap. Emblazoned across the cardboard tab was a single word written in sharp, red ink: ORIGINS.

Clara’s pulse spiked. She glanced toward the front seat, but the driver was a stoic man in a dark suit who hadn’t spoken a single word since she climbed inside. He kept his eyes locked on the road, navigating the late-night congestion with mechanical precision. Turning her attention back to the folder, Clara untied the frayed string and pulled out the contents.

Inside lay a collection of legal documents, photographs, and printed email transcripts. The topmost paper was a birth certificate dated thirty-two years ago, bearing names she recognized intimately: Julian Vance, and an infant registered under a completely different surname. Beneath it lay bank statements tracing a trail of hush money paid out over a decade—not by Julian, but by his father, to bury a scandal that could shatter the Vance family empire before it ever went public.

"What is this?" Clara whispered to herself, flipping a page to reveal a photograph of a much younger Julian standing outside a courthouse in Boston, shaking hands with a high-powered defense attorney alongside a woman who bore an uncanny, terrifying resemblance to Victoria.

Her phone buzzed again against the leather seat. This time, it wasn't the accountant, and it wasn't Julian. It was a text message from an unlisted international number containing a single string of coordinates and a timestamp: 02:00 AM. Pier 44.

Clara stared at the glowing numbers, her mind racing. The accountant had told her to rush downtown to stop the asset transfer at the hotel registry office. But the documents in her lap—and the mysterious international text—suggested that the financial fraud at the Grand Belmont was merely a distraction, a smoke screen masking a much deeper, darker family conspiracy that went back decades.

"Driver," Clara said sharply, leaning toward the partition separating the back seat from the front. "Change of plans. We are not going to the registry office."

The driver didn't flinch, nor did he alter his speed. He simply signaled and merged into the left lane, heading toward the industrial waterfront instead of the glittering skyscrapers of the financial district. "Mr. Vance gave specific instructions to take you wherever you needed to go," the driver replied, his voice flat and robotic.

"I am not talking about Julian," Clara said, her voice dropping an octave into dangerous territory. "I am talking about the person who hired you. Turn the car toward Pier 44 right now, or I will open this door while we are doing sixty on the highway."

The driver finally glanced up into the rearview mirror, his eyes locking onto Clara’s fierce reflection. A slow, cautious smile touched the corner of his mouth as he twisted the steering wheel hard to the right.

"Smart girl," the driver muttered, accelerating into the foggy docks. "Victoria has been waiting for you to catch up."
