Chapter 6 - The Missing Millions

The heavy silence in the foyer felt suffocating. Detective Miller’s words hung in the air like poison smoke, wrapping around Arthur’s throat and choking off any defense he might have attempted.

Arthur slumped against the wall, the polished wood of his black suit jacket rustling softly as he slid his hands down his face. His short dark hair was messy now, the neat corporate image completely shattered.

“It’s not what it looks like,” Arthur mumbled through his fingers, his voice muffled and desperate. “It was a bridge loan. Just a temporary liquidity maneuver to cover a shortfall in the firm’s development portfolio. I was going to pay it back before anyone noticed.”

“Firm portfolio?” Veronica stepped closer, her voice laced with sharp disbelief. “Arthur, you haven’t worked at a real estate firm in over three years! You told me you were consulting independently from home. You told me those long hours at the computer were for freelance graphic design clients!”

Detective Miller glanced between Veronica and Arthur, flipping open a small notebook from his jacket pocket. He ran a thumb down a neatly handwritten page before looking up at Clara, who had stepped out of the living room to stand defensively beside her son.

“Mrs. Clara Vance,” the detective said, reading a name directly from his notes. “Your name is also listed as a primary beneficiary on the corporate resolution filed by Apex Holdings. Care to explain why a retired schoolteacher is receiving wire transfers from a commercial real estate trust?”

Clara lifted her chin, her pearl necklace gleaming under the hallway light. Despite the grim situation, her aristocratic arrogance refused to yield.

“My son was simply honoring a familial debt,” Clara declared, her voice ringing clear and steady through the foyer. “My late husband left our family estate severely mismanaged. Arthur merely used his legal access as a licensed broker to reclaim what was rightfully ours from the corporate accounts he previously managed.”

Veronica’s breath caught in her throat. She looked at her husband with horror dawning in her eyes.

“Licensed broker?” Veronica repeated, the words tasting like ash. “Arthur, your license was suspended five years ago for regulatory violations. You told me you let it lapse voluntarily!”

Arthur lowered his hands, his eyes red-rimmed and pleading. “I had to keep working, Veronica. The debts my mother accumulated after my father passed—they were drowning us. If I didn’t take that position under the table, the bank would have foreclosed on this house long before you ever saw a negative balance.”

“So you stole from your former employer? You embezzled corporate funds and hid them in shell companies using our personal savings as a secondary safety net?” Veronica’s voice rose, cracking with emotional devastation. She pulled the smartphone from her back pocket, the red numbers of the negative balance mocking her very existence. “You risked our home, our children, my entire life’s work, just to bail out your mother’s bad investments?”

Detective Miller stepped forward, closing his notebook with a sharp snap. He reached into his coat and produced a pair of sleek steel handcuffs.

“Mr. Arthur Vance,” Detective Miller said formally, stepping closer to the trembling man. “Step away from the wall and put your hands behind your back.”

Before the cold metal could click around Arthur’s wrists, Clara let out a sharp cry and lunged forward, grabbing the detective’s arm.

“You can’t arrest him!” Clara screamed, her composure finally cracking into wild desperation. “He has the master key to the offshore accounts! If you take him now, the money vanishes forever!”
