Chapter 2 - The Crimson Ledger

The silence in the living room grew so heavy that the ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner sounded like a series of hammer blows. Veronica’s eyes remained locked on the phone screen, the glowing red numbers illuminating the exhaustion etched deep into her thirty-year-old face.
“I asked you a question,” Veronica repeated, her tone chillingly calm compared to her earlier outburst. “Where is the college fund? Where is the mortgage money? We had eighty thousand dollars saved yesterday.”
Arthur swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing sharply against his grey tie. He glanced sideways at his mother, Clara, who had smoothly resumed her seat on the sofa. Clara’s gray hair was immaculately styled, her maroon dress perfectly smoothed over her knees. She gave Arthur a subtle, almost imperceptible nod of reassurance.
“It’s a bank error, Veronica,” Arthur said finally, his voice lacking conviction. He took a cautious step forward, his hands raised palms up in a placating gesture. “The system is probably undergoing routine weekend maintenance. You know how these modern financial applications are. They glitch all the time.”
“A glitch?” Veronica let out a dry, humorless laugh. She lowered the phone just enough to glare at her husband. “A glitch doesn’t drain every single cent down to a negative balance, Arthur. And a glitch certainly doesn’t transfer funds to an external account ending in four thousand two hundred and eleven.”
Five-year-old Leo whimpered, burying his face in Lily’s light purple dress. Lily still cradled her bruised arm, her big blue eyes darting between the adults. The sight of her children terrified in their own home snapped something fragile inside Veronica. She had spent the last three days driving across state lines to care for her ailing sister, trusting her husband to manage the household and protect their children. This was how he protected them.
“Veronica, you are hysterical,” Clara interjected, her voice smooth and dripping with patronizing pity. The elderly woman crossed her legs. “You’ve always been high-strung, ever since Arthur brought you into this family. A strong marriage requires trust, not immediate accusations.”
“Stay out of this, Clara,” Veronica snapped, pointing the smartphone directly at her mother-in-law. “This isn’t about trust. This is about survival.”
Arthur stepped between the two women, positioning his black suit jacket defensively. “Calm down, Veronica. Let’s sit down and talk about this like adults. We can call customer service in the morning.”

“There is no morning, Arthur,” Veronica whispered, her phone buzzing aggressively in her palm as a new push notification popped up from the bank. She glanced down at the screen, and the blood drained entirely from her face.
