Chapter 5 - The Unexpected Visitor

The musical chime of the doorbell echoed through the quiet suburban house, freezing everyone in their tracks. Arthur turned his head toward the front entryway, his brow furrowed in sudden confusion. Clara’s aristocratic composure slipped for a fraction of a second, her hand instinctively rising to touch her white pearl necklace.
“Are you expecting someone, Arthur?” Clara asked, her voice losing its previous edge as uncertainty crept in.
“No,” Arthur replied, shaking his head. “Nobody knows we’re back from the trip yet. At least, nobody from our social circle.”
Veronica seized the moment of distraction. While Arthur’s attention was diverted toward the foyer, she sidestepped him with practiced agility, grabbing her car keys from the counter. She scooped up her smartphone, the negative balance still glaring from the screen, and slipped it into her back pocket.
“Stay here with the kids,” Veronica whispered bitterly to Arthur as she brushed past him toward the front door. “Whoever is out there is about to witness a very interesting family reunion.”
“Veronica, wait,” Arthur called out, trailing a few steps behind her.
Veronica ignored him and reached the heavy wooden front door. She threw the deadbolt back with a loud click and pulled the door open.
Standing on the porch was not a neighbor or a delivery driver. It was a tall, broad-shouldered man in his late forties wearing a weathered leather jacket over a faded flannel shirt. His face was weathered by the sun, stubble shadowing his jaw, and his eyes were sharp and alert. In his hand, he held a thick manila envelope stamped with a government seal.
“Veronica Vance?” the man asked, his voice gravelly and direct.
“Yes,” Veronica said, her heart hammering against her ribs. “Who are you?”
“My name is Detective Miller,” the man said, flashing a dark leather badge case for a split second before sliding it back into his pocket. “I’m with the county financial crimes division. I’m looking for Arthur Vance.”
Arthur, who had just stepped into the foyer behind Veronica, turned completely white. The color drained from his face so fast he looked like a ghost. Clara gasped audibly from the living room, clutching the fabric of her maroon dress at her chest.
“Detective,” Arthur choked out, his voice thin and trembling. “There must be some mistake. I haven’t done anything illegal.”
Detective Miller stepped past Veronica without waiting for an invitation, tracking dust onto the pristine hardwood floor. He pulled a folded document from the manila envelope and held it out toward Arthur.
“Mr. Vance, you’re not under arrest yet,” Detective Miller said evenly, his eyes scanning the luxurious living room, the untouched birthday cake, and the frightened children huddled in the hallway. “But I have a court order to seize all electronic assets tied to Apex Holdings, including the primary household accounts. You’ve been flagged for transferring over two hundred thousand dollars of institutional funds into personal shell companies.”
Veronica stared at the detective, then slowly turned her head to look at her husband. The negative balance on her phone suddenly made terrifying, crystal-clear sense.

“Institutional funds?” Veronica whispered, her voice shaking. “Arthur... whose money did you steal?”
