Chapter 6

The morning sun had barely cleared the horizon when a sharp, authoritative rapping echoed against the front door. Clara froze midway through spooning oatmeal into a small bowl. She looked at the clock on the microwave—7:15 AM. Maya was still asleep in her crib, thank goodness. Clara placed the spoon down slowly, wiping her hands on a dish towel as she walked down the hallway. She didn't need to check the peephole to know who was standing on the other side. The rhythm of the knocks was unmistakable—deliberate, impatient, and designed to assert dominance.

Clara turned the deadbolt and pulled the door open just a few inches, keeping the security chain securely latched. Elena stood on the welcome mat, flanked by a tall, impeccably dressed man holding a leather briefcase. Elena wore a cream-colored trench coat over her dark red blouse, her short blonde hair perfectly coiffed despite the morning chill. She looked at the narrow gap in the door with undisguised disdain.

"Really, Clara? Are we playing games now?" Elena asked, her voice dripping with condescension. "Open the door. I brought Mr. Henderson from our family legal counsel to discuss the living arrangements before this gets completely out of hand."

Clara stared through the gap, her heart pounding against her ribs, but her facial expression remained a mask of calm resolve. She remembered the trust documents she had read the night before; she knew Elena was operating on borrowed time and false confidence.

"Mr. Henderson can leave," Clara said evenly, her voice steady and controlled. "And so can you, Mom. You have no legal right to demand entry into my home."

Mr. Henderson stepped forward, offering a polite, practiced smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Ms. Vance, we simply want to review the property stipulations to ensure a smooth transition for the infant. Litigation is expensive and stressful, especially for a new mother."

It was a thinly veiled threat disguised as professional advice. Clara felt a surge of adrenaline, but she forced herself to breathe slowly, keeping her voice level. "If you or my mother attempt to file anything, I will present the original trust agreement, complete with the six-month vesting clause, directly to the family court judge. I suggest you both review your paperwork before making any formal filings."

Elena’s polite facade cracked instantly. The color drained from her cheeks, replaced by a flash of genuine panic before her expression hardened back into fury. She pushed against the door, but the chain held firm.

"You don't know what you're talking about, Clara!" Elena hissed, losing her composure for a fraction of a second. "You are completely dependent on me, and you will learn your place!"

"My place is right here, protecting my daughter," Clara replied quietly, and without another word, she closed the door firmly in their faces, sliding the deadbolt home with a loud, satisfying click.
