Chapter 10

Clara tapped the screen of her phone, downloading the digital PDF of the emergency stay signed by Judge Harrison himself. The document explicitly halted all property injunctions and welfare evaluations pending a formal evidentiary hearing scheduled for Monday morning. Armed with legal armor, Clara walked firmly to the front door, unlocked the deadbolt, and pulled the heavy oak panel wide open.

The cold morning air rushed into the entryway, carrying the scent of damp pavement and pine. Deputy Miller stood on the threshold, flanked by a nervous-looking Mr. Henderson and Elena, who wore an expression of supreme, unyielding confidence. Elena opened her mouth to speak, assuming she was witnessing the final surrender of her defiant daughter.

"Clara, it's over," Elena began, her voice sharp and authoritative. "Hand over the child and let the court-appointed officers inspect the premises."

Clara didn't flinch. Instead, she raised her phone, displaying the illuminated screen directly toward Deputy Miller and the corporate attorney. "Before anyone takes another step onto my property, I suggest you read this document," Clara said, her voice remarkably steady and clear. "It is an emergency judicial stay issued ten minutes ago by Judge Harrison. It invalidates any current injunctions and orders all pending evaluations halted until Monday's hearing."

Deputy Miller stepped forward, taking the phone from Clara's outstretched hand to review the digital seal and judicial signature. His expression shifted from official sternness to professional neutrality as he scrolled through the text. Mr. Henderson peered over the deputy's shoulder, his polite corporate smile instantly vanishing as his eyes scanned the legal phrasing.

Elena lunged forward, her face contorting in disbelief. "Let me see that! That's impossible! Mr. Henderson, tell him it's a forgery!"

Mr. Henderson adjusted his glasses, swallowing hard as he shook his head. "It's authentic, Mrs. Vance. Judge Harrison's electronic signature is fully verified. We cannot proceed with the injunction today."

Elena stared at the attorney, then whipped her gaze back to Clara, her eyes blazing with raw fury. For the first time, the immaculate veneer of the matriarch cracked completely, revealing a woman desperate and terrified of losing her absolute control. She pointed a trembling finger directly at Clara’s face, her voice rising in pitch. "You think this protects you? You are nothing without me! You will be ruined by Monday afternoon!"

"Get off my property," Clara said quietly, her eyes locked onto her mother's without a shred of fear.

Deputy Miller gently stepped between them, gesturing for Elena and her entourage to step back. "Ma'am, you heard the resident. You need to leave the premises immediately, or I will cite you for trespassing."

Defeated for the moment, Elena turned sharply on her heel and marched down the walkway toward her idling sedan, her pride shattered. Clara stood in the doorway, watching them drive away, knowing the real battle was still waiting for her on Monday morning.
