Chapter 5: Shadows in the Warehouse

The silence inside the warehouse became absolute, suffocating, and heavy with impending violence. Maya held her breath, pressing her back against the cool brick wall near the entrance. The red emergency strobes cast erratic, pulsing beams across the rows of server racks, turning the room into a surreal landscape of blood and shadow. In the center of the room, Arthur stood completely still, his eyes narrowed as he listened intently to the faint sound of footsteps crunching on gravel outside the heavy metal door.
“Leo, route the remaining logs to the encrypted cloud vault and wipe the local drives,” Arthur ordered in a low, steely whisper that brook no argument. “Maya, stay behind the main console and do not make a sound.”
“Dad, no! I’m not leaving you here,” Maya hissed, stepping forward out of the shadows.
“Quiet, Maya!” Arthur snapped softly, his eyes flashing with fierce protection. “They aren’t here to negotiate. They are here to retrieve the physical drive.”
A heavy, metallic thud echoed against the side door, followed by the screech of reinforced steel bending under the force of a hydraulic breaching tool. Sparks showered across the floor through the bottom crack of the door. Leo’s fingers danced across the keyboard with frantic speed, a progress bar on his monitor creeping painfully slow: 94%... 95%... 96%...
“Come on, come on,” Leo muttered under his breath, sweat beading on his forehead.
With a deafening crash, the heavy metal door flew inward, torn off its hinges and slamming flat onto the concrete floor. Three figures stepped into the red-lit haze, dressed head-to-toe in tactical black gear, their faces hidden behind dark riot helmets and ballistic visors. They moved with the terrifying, synchronized precision of professional mercenaries, raising suppressed submachine guns as they scanned the room.
The lead operative lowered his weapon slightly, his voice distorted and metallic through the comms unit. “Arthur Sterling. Step away from the console. You are holding property that belongs to the Vance Group.”
Arthur didn't flinch. He slowly raised his hands, stepping away from the biometric scanner just enough to block the operatives' direct line of sight to Leo’s terminal. “The Vance Group ceased to exist twenty minutes ago,” Arthur said calmly, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. “You’re guarding a ghost, gentlemen.”

The operative raised his rifle directly toward Arthur’s chest. “We aren't here for the company, Mr. Sterling. We’re here for the physical ledger. And we’re authorized to use any means necessary to secure it.”
Maya, watching from behind the console, felt her heart stop. She looked down at the desk. Leo’s screen flashed a brilliant green: Transfer Complete. Local Drive Erased. But at that exact second, the lead operative turned his helmet toward the console, spotting Maya cowering in the dim red light. He raised his weapon, pivoting away from Arthur and aiming directly at her.
