Chapter 11: The Collapse of the Empire

The morning rush hour traffic crawled along the interstate bridges as rain continued to pelt the bulletproof glass of Marcus’s van. Inside, the cabin was silent save for the steady broadcast of the national news network playing over the built-in speaker system. A stern-faced anchor was reading directly from the encrypted documents Arthur had just transmitted, displaying high-resolution scans of the handwritten ledger pages, bank routing numbers, and corporate directives signed by Jonathan and Evelyn Vance.
Maya sat in the back, leaning against her father’s shoulder, the heavy leather ledger resting safely in her lap. The exhaustion of the past twenty-four hours weighed heavily on her bones, yet a profound sense of peace had settled over her spirit. The cycle of deceit and stolen legacy was finally being broken in the harsh light of public scrutiny.
“Look at the stock market tickers,” Leo said from the front passenger seat, pointing a shaking finger at his laptop screen. “Vance Global Holdings just hit circuit breakers. Institutional investors are pulling out billions in real-time. The board of directors is resigning en masse.”
Arthur looked out the window at the towering glass skyscrapers of downtown, where the iconic Vance logo loomed large against the gray morning sky. For twenty years, those buildings had represented an impenetrable fortress of stolen wealth. Now, they were monuments to an empire built on sand.
“It’s not over yet, Leo,” Arthur warned quietly. “People like Evelyn do not go down quietly. When their money vanishes, they resort to desperate measures.”
Just as he spoke, the radio receiver inside the van crackled with a scrambled police dispatch frequency. Marcus reached over and adjusted the dial, his face tightening as he listened to the encrypted audio.
“All units, be advised. Suspect vehicle registered to Evelyn Vance is currently blocking the south exit of the interstate tunnel ahead,” the dispatcher’s automated voice barked. “Target is considered armed, unstable, and attempting to flee the jurisdiction.”
Marcus slammed on the brakes, sending the van skidding sideways across the wet asphalt as he pulled off onto an emergency service slip road just before the tunnel entrance. Through the falling rain, they could see a sleek, silver luxury sports car parked diagonally across all three lanes of the interstate, blocking the path entirely. Standing beside the open driver’s door, drenched in rain and wearing her ruined gold sequined gown beneath a heavy trench coat, was Evelyn Vance.

She held a small leather briefcase in one hand and a heavy-duty encrypted satellite transmitter in the other. Her hair was unraveled, whipping wildly in the wind, and her eyes burned with a manic, desperate fury.
“She’s trying to wipe the remaining offshore servers manually before the federal marshals arrive,” Leo said, his fingers flying across his keyboard. “If she connects that transmitter to the regional grid, she can burn the digital evidence forever.”
