Chapter 10: The Tunnel of Truth

The heavy steel door of Catherine’s room rattled violently as the tactical security forces slammed against it from the hallway. Marcus braced his shoulder against the oak frame, aiming his pistol toward the threshold as the reinforced lock began to spark under an electronic cutter.

“Move, Arthur! Now!” Marcus shouted over the screaming alarms.

Arthur didn’t hesitate. He rushed to the mahogany bookshelf on the far wall, gripping the carved wooden molding and pulling hard. With a heavy grinding sound, the entire shelf swung inward on concealed hinges, revealing a dark, damp concrete tunnel sloping downward into the earth. The air smelled of damp stone and rushing water.

“Maya, get inside,” Arthur ordered, pushing the heavy leather ledger into her hands. “Hold onto this with your life.”

“I’m not leaving Catherine!” Maya cried, looking back toward the elderly woman who remained calmly seated in her armchair by the cold fireplace.

Catherine offered a serene, tragic smile, shaking her head. “If I leave with you, they will hunt us down before we reach the main road. My absence will buy you the time you need to escape this facility. Go, Maya. Make them pay for everything.”

With a heavy heart, Arthur pulled Maya into the dark tunnel just as the oak door behind them splintered inward with a deafening crash. Armed guards poured into the room, their tactical flashlights cutting through the dust. Marcus fired a single warning shot into the ceiling before diving backward into the tunnel, pulling the heavy bookshelf shut behind them just as bullets began to shred the wooden frame.

They scrambled through the narrow, pitch-black drainage tunnel, the sound of rushing rainwater echoing in the distance. Mud and gravel sucked at Maya’s boots, but the leather ledger clutched tightly against her chest gave her superhuman strength. Up ahead, a faint circle of gray dawn light marked the exit of the culvert.

Emerging into the biting cold of the pine forest, they found Marcus’s backup van idling near the tree line. Without a word, they piled into the back doors, slamming them shut as Marcus leaped into the driver’s seat and slammed his foot on the gas. The tires kicked up a shower of wet mud and gravel as the van surged forward, breaking through the perimeter fence and hurtling down the winding mountain road toward the city.

In the passenger seat, Arthur pulled out his encrypted satellite phone, dialing a pre-programmed number that routed directly to the national media broadcast networks.

“This is Arthur Sterling,” Arthur said into the receiver, his voice cold, steady, and carrying the weight of a twenty-year war. “I have the original master ledger and the confession regarding the corporate conspiracy of the Vance conglomerate. Broadcast it live on all channels immediately.”

Back at the Grandview penthouse suite, Evelyn Vance stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the morning sunrise over the city skyline. Her phone buzzed relentlessly on the marble table. She picked it up, expecting another frantic call from her brother Jonathan. Instead, every television screen mounted on the luxury walls simultaneously flickered, cutting away from the morning news to display a stark, unedited digital document: The Sterling-Vance Conspiracy Files.

Evelyn dropped her phone, her face turning chalk white as her life’s work disintegrated before her eyes.
