Chapter 3 - Ashes That Refused to Stay Buried

The shattered pieces of crystal lay scattered like diamonds across the patio, ignored by everyone as the weight of the past crashed violently into the present. Victoria stood frozen, her white dress fluttering slightly in the breeze, but her body felt entirely numb. The woman standing before her was not a stranger from the streets, nor a random beggar seeking charity. It was Elena Vance, the mother Victoria had mourned for two decades—a mother whose sudden disappearance had been wrapped in official police reports and carefully fabricated grief.

“I didn’t die, Victoria,” Elena whispered, stepping closer despite Julian’s panicked attempt to block her path. “I was sent away. Exiled. Paid to vanish so that your ambitious husband and your equally ruthless grandfather could inherit an empire built entirely on stolen land and forged signatures.”

Julian stepped directly between his wife and her mother, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle twitched violently in his cheek. His dark suit jacket was slightly askew, a stark contrast to his usual immaculate presentation.

“Elena, you agreed to the terms twenty years ago,” Julian said through gritted teeth, his voice a low, threatening hiss meant only for her ears. “You took the settlement. You signed the nondisclosure agreement. Coming back here now isn’t just a breach of contract; it’s a federal crime.”

“Contracts signed under coercion and the threat of my daughter’s life aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on, Julian,” Elena replied without a single trace of fear. Her weathered hand remained steady as she clutched the heavy ledger against her chest. She looked past Julian’s broad shoulder, locking her gaze directly onto Victoria, who was now trembling visibly. “Your husband didn’t rescue you from poverty, Victoria. He bought you from the men who destroyed our family. And every luxury you enjoy today is stained with the blood of innocent people.”

Victoria shook her head frantically, taking another step back until the back of her knees hit the wrought-iron edge of a garden bench.

“It’s a lie! Both of you are lying!” Victoria shouted, her voice cracking with hysteria as the polished facade of her perfect life dissolved into absolute chaos. “Julian told me everything! He said my father was a thief who ruined us!”

“Your father tried to expose them,” Elena countered, her voice ringing with absolute truth. She reached into the canvas bag once more and pulled out a thick stack of faded yellow photographs, dropping them onto the damp grass at Victoria’s feet.

Victoria looked down, her breath hitching in her throat as her eyes registered the images. They showed her father—not as the broken, desperate criminal she had been led to believe, but as a vibrant, honest man standing in front of a modest home that bore a striking, terrifying resemblance to the estate they were currently standing on. Stamped across the back of every single photo was a legal seal belonging to Vance Industries—the very corporation Julian now commanded as CEO.

Before Victoria could bend down to pick up the photographs, Julian lunged forward and kicked them violently across the lawn, sending them scattering into the flowerbeds.

“Get off this property right now, or I’ll have security drag you to a psychiatric ward!” Julian roared, his polished demeanor completely shattered, revealing the desperate, ruthless tyrant underneath.
