Chapter 10 - The Glass Greenhouse at Midnight

The Vance estate was shrouded in eerie darkness when the convoy of vehicles pulled through the wrought-iron security gates. The festive string lights that had illuminated the afternoon garden party were now turned off, casting the manicured lawns and stone pathways into deep, menacing shadows. Detective Vance’s cruiser led the way, its headlights sweeping across the sprawling facade of the mansion before cutting hard toward the massive glass greenhouse located at the far edge of the property, hidden behind a dense hedge of weeping willows.

Victoria stepped out of the town car first, her bare feet pressing into the damp grass once again, though this time she felt no cold, only a burning fire in her veins. Elena and Samuel followed closely behind her, while two uniformed police officers flanked Detective Vance as he approached the heavy double doors of the greenhouse.

The greenhouse was a massive structure of iron framing and thick, frosted glass panels, filled with exotic tropical plants, towering ferns, and rows of vibrant orchids that smelled faintly of damp earth and sweet decay. It was Julian’s private sanctuary, a place he frequently claimed was his personal retreat for botanical cultivation, where no domestic staff or family members were ever permitted to enter without his explicit permission.

Detective Vance shone his flashlight beam across the heavy brass padlock securing the double doors.

“Let’s see if your father’s key still works after all these years,” the detective said, stepping aside to allow Victoria to approach the lock.

Victoria stepped forward, her hands steady as she pulled the small brass key from her pocket. She slid it into the rusted keyhole. It resisted for a fraction of a second before turning with a sharp, echoing click that seemed to reverberate through the silent night air. She pulled the heavy padlock free, letting it drop into the mulch with a dull thud, and pulled the glass door open.

A wave of warm, humid air rushed out to meet them, carrying the heavy, metallic scent of old paper, damp soil, and something distinctly industrial.

As they stepped inside, Samuel flicked on the master wall switch, flooding the vast interior with the harsh, sterile glare of overhead fluorescent lighting. Rows of lush green plants gave way to a startling architectural anomaly at the very center of the greenhouse. A large, hydraulic stone slab was set directly into the flagstone floor, surrounded by decorative planters.

“Look at the interlocking pavers around the base of the fountain,” Samuel noted, pointing a calloused finger toward the floor. “They’re not mortared down. They’re built on a mechanical track.”

Detective Vance immediately signaled the two patrol officers forward. Working together, they jammed their heavy flashlights into the cracks of the stone slab and heaved with all their might. With a grinding screech of protesting metal and gears, the heavy hydraulic stone slowly slid sideways, revealing a dark, yawning concrete staircase descending into the subterranean depths beneath the estate.

Victoria peered down into the black abyss, her breath hitching in her throat as a cold draft billowed up from the hidden bunker below.

“This is where Julian kept the corporate ledgers,” Victoria whispered, her voice echoing in the enclosed space. “And this is where we find out everything he tried to bury.”
