Chapter 12 - The Collapse of the Corporate Empire

The morning sun broke over the horizon, casting a brilliant golden glow across the manicured lawns of the Vance estate, but the pristine illusion of the property was completely shattered. Two large police transport vans and three unmarked forensic units were parked haphazardly across the front lawn, their tires tearing up the expensive flowerbeds and leaving deep ruts in the emerald turf. Uniformed officers carried heavy cardboard boxes filled with documents, ledger books, and magnetic tape reels out of the greenhouse entrance, stacking them methodically into the back of the forensic trucks.

Victoria stood on the stone patio, holding a warm cup of black coffee between her hands. She had changed out of her mud-stained white dress into a sharp, tailored black pantsuit—the exact color of mourning, but also the color of absolute authority. Her brunette hair was pulled back into a sleek, flawless bun, and her expression was a mask of cold, unyielding resolve.

Elena sat nearby on the iron garden bench, wrapped in a warm wool shawl, watching the dismantling of the empire that had once held them both captive. Samuel Thorne stood quietly beside them, coordinating with the lead forensic investigator regarding the digital hard drives recovered from the subterranean vault.

A sleek black sedan pulled up sharply outside the front gates, and two men in expensive, conservative business suits stepped out, walking briskly up the driveway. They were senior board members of Vance Industries—men who had stood by Julian’s side for over a decade, quietly nodding along to his corporate directives while ignoring the ethical rot at the foundation of the company.

As they reached the steps of the patio, Detective Vance stepped forward, effectively blocking their path with his arms crossed over his chest.

“Gentlemen, visiting hours are over,” Detective Vance stated flatly, his voice echoing across the courtyard. “Unless you’re here to voluntarily surrender your corporate badges and confess to your involvement in the Vance Industries embezzlement scheme, I suggest you turn around and walk back to your cars.”

The lead board member, a gray-haired man named Arthur Sterling, flushed a deep shade of crimson. He puffed out his chest, attempting to deploy the same arrogant authority that had dominated corporate boardrooms for years.

“Listen to me, Detective, we are the executive board of Vance Industries!” Sterling snapped, his voice trembling with manufactured outrage. “We had no knowledge of Julian’s unauthorized private transactions! We demand to speak to Victoria Vance immediately. She has no legal right to halt corporate operations without a shareholder vote!”

Victoria slowly set her coffee cup down on the stone table, the small clink of ceramic cutting sharply through Sterling’s tirade. She walked forward until she stood directly behind Detective Vance, looking down at the terrified board members with eyes as cold and sharp as broken glass.

“You didn’t know, Arthur?” Victoria asked softly, her voice carrying a terrifying, measured cadence. “Is that why your signature appears on the offshore shell corporation transfers dated three weeks after my father was committed to the sanitarium?”
