Chapter 5: Descent into the Archives

The hospital at night possessed a different kind of life, one defined by the hum of massive HVAC systems, the scent of antiseptic, and the quiet footsteps of night-shift nurses moving through dim corridors. Elias led Elena through a restricted service elevator that required both his biometric thumbprint and a six-digit cryptographic pin. Evelyn had been escorted to a secure holding room upstairs under the watchful eye of federal marshals Elias had contacted immediately after leaving Elena’s bedside.
The basement archives smelled of old paper, ozone, and decades of accumulated dust. Rows of steel shelving stretched into the shadows, housing medical records, financial audits, and administrative logs dating back to the founding of Saint Jude Memorial. Elias walked briskly down aisle four, his white lab coat brushing against cardboard boxes marked with yellowed labels.
"David spent his final weeks down here," Elias said quietly, his hand trailing along the cold metal of a filing cabinet. "He told me he found something irregular in the obstetrics endowment fund, but he wouldn't tell me specifics. He was afraid for my safety, believing someone within the board was willing to eliminate anyone who got too close to the trust accounts."
Elena walked beside him, carrying a ruggedized tablet connected via encrypted local network to the hospital's mainframe. Her pregnancy made movement slow and deliberate, but her mind was razor-sharp. "He wasn't paranoid," she said, stopping in front of an unmarked metal vault near the back of the room. "Look at the seal on this door. It's an older biometric lock, but the digital interface has been accessed within the last twelve hours."
Elias knelt beside the control panel. He examined the small scratch marks around the data port. "Someone downloaded the raw telemetry data from the obstetrics wing. Patient intake files, surrogate registration logs, and birth-to-inheritance tracking algorithms."
"That's why Evelyn was so desperate to get rid of me," Elena realized, the pieces clicking together with terrifying clarity. "It's not just about embezzlement. The Vance family has been manipulating the hospital's surrogate assignment registry for over a decade. They've been swapping infants born to destitute mothers with elite heirs to ensure their bloodline maintained absolute control over corporate seats."

Elias stood up slowly, the weight of the discovery aging him visibly beneath the harsh overhead lights. "My God. They weren't just stealing money. They were manufacturing a dynasty."
Elena tapped the tablet screen, initiating a data extraction sequence that would pull every hidden file directly into her secure off-site drive before the building's central server could execute a remote wipe. The progress bar crept forward: 10%, 25%, 50%. Suddenly, the overhead lights flickered and died, plunging the archive room into absolute darkness save for the eerie blue glow of the tablet screen.
