Chapter 11: The Rebirth of Saint Jude Memorial

Spring bloomed fully across the hospital campus, transforming the sterile concrete courtyards into vibrant patches of green grass, blooming tulips, and newly planted oak trees that filtered the bright sunlight through the large windows of Elena’s recovery suite. The heavy police presence at the doors had long since been reduced to routine administrative security, signaling that the immediate physical danger had completely passed.

Elena was scheduled for discharge the following morning. Her health had stabilized completely, and the baby was thriving, defying all the stress and trauma of her early confinement. Her hospital room looked less like a clinical ward and more like a welcoming nursery, filled with flowers from hospital staff, legal documents of the newly restructured foundation, and the small wooden box containing David’s journal.

Dr. Elias Raymold walked in carrying a large cardboard box filled with personal files and audit reports he wanted Elena’s professional opinion on before they were formally submitted to the federal oversight committee.

"You're turning me back into an auditor before I've even changed a single diaper," Elena joked, smiling as she took the top folder from his hands.

"An auditor with a controlling stake in the foundation, I might add," Elias countered with a dry grin, pulling up a chair. "Besides, your forensic instincts saved this entire enterprise. I trust your review far more than any external consulting firm we could hire."

They spent the next hour going through the financial allocations for the newly established David and Elena Raymold Foundation. Every trace of the embezzlement schemes orchestrated by Arthur and Evelyn Vance had been scrubbed from the accounts, and the recovered funds were already being deployed to upgrade neonatal intensive care units across three state regions.

"Arthur’s trial date has been set for early autumn," Elias mentioned casually, setting a cup of tea on the bedside table. "His defense attorneys are trying to cut a plea deal to avoid the maximum sentence, but federal prosecutors are standing firm. With Marcus Thorne cooperating fully in exchange for witness protection, they don't have a legal leg to stand on."

Elena nodded, feeling no satisfaction in their downfall, only a profound sense of closure. "Let justice take its course. We have a foundation to run and a family to protect."

Elias looked at her, his expression turning serious. "Speaking of family... I’ve had the penthouse suite on the hospital’s executive floor completely remodeled for you and the baby. It has a private elevator, secure biometric access, and a full nursery. You won't have to worry about stepping out into the harsh world until you're ready."

Elena was touched by the gesture, knowing it came from a place of genuine paternal care rather than aristocratic obligation. "Thank you, Elias. But I want to move back to my own home eventually. I want this child to grow up knowing the real world, outside of corporate towers and hospital walls."

Elias smiled warmly, recognizing the fierce independence that had drawn David to her in the first place. "Then we'll secure your home with the same cryptographic protocols. But until then, the penthouse is yours."
