Chapter 5: Glass and Shadows

The deafening crash of breaking glass shattered the momentary stalemate in the kitchen. Shards of safety glass rained across the hardwood of the adjoining dining room like glittering hail. Elena dropped the heavy iron skillet, the metallic clang echoing through the house as she threw herself across the kitchen floor to shield Toby with her own body.

Detective Vance staggered backward, clutching his bruised wrist where the skillet had struck him. He swore loudly, his eyes darting frantically between the disarmed mechanic and the shattered front window.

“You absolute fool!” Vance snarled, lunging for his service weapon where it lay near the refrigerator.

Before Vance’s fingers could wrap around the grip of the gun, a heavy combat boot descended onto the weapon, pinning it firmly to the floor. The mechanic stood over the gun, his jaw clenched, his eyes fixed on Vance with cold, unyielding fury.

“You’re done, Vance. The circuit court already has the backup hard drive,” the mechanic said, his voice flat and menacing.

Through the broken front window, a thick plume of dark smoke began to billow inward from the driveway. Elena’s eyes watered instantly as the acrid scent of burning rubber and gasoline filled the air.

“The car!” Elena gasped, pulling Toby up by his small blue t-shirt. “Toby, we have to get out of the back door right now!”

The boy was coughing, tears streaming down his face as he clutched the gold pendant tightly in his fist. He didn't hesitate, scrambling toward the rear exit with a surprising burst of speed for someone so young and bruised. The mechanic followed closely behind them, using his broad shoulders to kick open the back screen door that had jammed shut during the confrontation.

As they burst out into the cool autumn air of the backyard, Elena looked back toward the driveway. Sarah’s sedan had returned, but it was now parked at an impossible angle, flames licking hungrily at the front tires and black smoke pouring from the hood. Standing near the blazing vehicle was a tall figure in a dark hoodie, watching them with an impassive expression before turning and sprinting toward the tree line.

“Is that him?” Elena shouted over the crackle of the fire, turning to the mechanic. “Is that the man who took my brother?”

The mechanic wiped a streak of black soot from his forehead, shaking his head slowly as he watched the figure disappear into the dense woods.

“No,” the mechanic replied grimly. “That’s just the cleaner. The person pulling the strings is already inside your house.”

Elena froze, the color draining from her face as she realized that the front door had been unlocked the entire time Vance was distracting them in the kitchen.
