Chapter 11: The Basement Stairs

The heavy steel door leading to the basement stairs stood ominously ajar across the open expanse of the concrete warehouse floor. The two guards in tactical gear shifted their weight restlessly, their weapons held at the ready as they muttered quietly to each other about the sudden absence of their colleague outside.
Elena pulled Toby tighter against her side, crouching low behind the massive generator crate. Her mind raced, calculating the distance and the impossible odds. Two armed professionals guarding a single entrance meant a direct frontal assault was suicide. She needed a distraction, and she needed Jax to rejoin them before things escalated beyond the point of no return.
As if summoned by her thoughts, a heavy metallic clang echoed from the far corner of the warehouse near the loading docks, followed by the sound of a heavy shipping crate sliding across the concrete floor.
One of the guards snapped his head toward the noise, cursing under his breath.
“Check the loading bay, Miller. That might be the backup unit arriving late,” the lead guard ordered, gesturing with the barrel of his submachine gun.
The second guard nodded, turning away from the basement door and jogging cautiously into the dim shadows toward the back of the facility.
Elena seized the momentary advantage. She leaned down to Toby, her eyes fierce and determined.
“Stay right here behind this crate, Toby. Do not move an inch until I come back for you,” she whispered, slipping her hand free from his grip.
“Aunt Elena, no,” Toby whimpered, his small fingers catching the fabric of her sleeve. “Don't leave me alone.”
“I have to, sweetie. Your dad is down those stairs,” she said softly, gently unlatching his grip.
Elena slipped away from the generator crate, utilizing the cover of towering wooden pallets stacked with industrial parts to close the distance to the single remaining guard. The man stood with his back to her, his attention entirely focused on the darkened warehouse interior where Jax was creating chaos. Elena crept forward like a cat, her sneakers making zero sound against the dusty concrete.
She reached the guard just as he shifted his stance, raising the heavy butt of her iron chain—which she had managed to bring through the vent—and bringing it down hard across the back of the man’s tactical helmet. The guard dropped instantly without a sound, crumbling to the floor like a sack of wet cement.
Elena caught his submachine gun before it hit the concrete, her arms straining under the unexpected weight. She dragged his limp body behind a stack of wooden crates, sliding the heavy steel door open another foot until the dark, concrete stairwell yawned open before her.
From the bottom of the stairs, a faint, metallic groan drifted upward, followed by a familiar voice that made Elena’s heart leap into her throat.
“I told you... I don't know where the ledger is,” Mark rasped, his voice weak and distorted by pain.

Elena didn't hesitate. She stepped across the threshold, gripping the weapon tightly, and descended into the dark abyss of the basement.
