Chapter 1: The Confrontation at the Fence

Elena’s chest heaved as she slammed her palms against the weathered wooden fence of the backyard, her breath pluming in the crisp autumn air. Her dark hair fell across her face in wild strands as she glared at Sarah, who stood frozen by the edge of the overgrown lawn.
Elena pointed a trembling finger at the blonde woman, her voice cracking with suppressed fury.
“I told you to shut up!”
Sarah took a half-step back, her eyes wide with a mixture of guilt and defiance.
“You don't understand the pressure, Elena. You weren't there when the debts came due.”
Elena sneered, stepping closer, refusing to give an inch of ground.
“You are not touching him again!”
Behind Elena's protective stance, young Toby stood shivering in his blue t-shirt. His cheek was swollen, a dark purple bruise blooming across his pale skin, and his tan pants were stained with dried mud. He clutched a small gold necklace in his tiny fist, the metal catching the pale sunlight. Elena dropped to her knees beside the boy, her anger instantly melting into a desperate, aching tenderness. She cupped his small chin, examining the injury with a soft hiss of breath.
“Where did you get this necklace, sweetie?” she asked, her voice dropping to a fragile whisper.
Toby looked up through tear-stained cheeks, his lower lip trembling violently as he tried to speak.
“My dad gave it to me before she took him away.”
Elena’s heart skipped a beat. She stared at the pendant, recognizing the distinct engraving of an anchor—the exact mark her missing brother, Mark, always wore. Toby squeezed his eyes shut, a fresh tear cutting a clean path through the dirt on his bruised cheek. He leaned closer to Elena, his voice barely audible over the rustling leaves.
“She knows where my dad is.”

Elena snapped her head up to confront Sarah, but the backyard was suddenly empty. Sarah was already speeding away in her sedan, leaving a cloud of dust. Elena turned back to Toby, only to find him clutching a folded piece of paper he must have pulled from his pocket, his eyes wide with silent terror.
