Chapter 8: The Return to Ashwood Bridge

The rain had finally tapered off by dawn, leaving the city draped in a thick, melancholic fog that clung to the cobblestone streets and rolled lazily off the surface of the dark river below. Ashwood Bridge loomed ahead of them like a skeletal monument from another era, its wrought-iron railings rusted and dripping with morning condensation. Elena parked her sedan a block away in a deserted alley, killing the engine. They sat in tense silence, watching the empty bridge for any sign of patrol cars or private security.

"Are you sure it's still there?" Hannah asked, wrapping her arms around herself as a shiver ran down her spine. Her light blue dress was dry now, though stained with dust from the warehouse floor.

"Julian is arrogant," Elena replied, checking the safety of the small digital voice recorder tucked into her vest pocket. "He believes you are still the broken girl in the wheelchair, incapable of piecing together the past. He hid your personal effects in the maintenance shed beneath the bridge's eastern pylon—the same shed he used to store his corporate files before moving his operations downtown."

They slipped out of the car and moved with silent, practiced stealth toward the pedestrian walkway of the bridge. The iron deck groaned softly beneath their footsteps, a sound that sent a sharp spike of adrenaline straight to Hannah’s heart. She paused midway across the span, walking slowly to the exact spot where her mother had stood three years ago. Leaning over the cold railing, she looked down at the swirling gray water below. The terror that had paralyzed her for years seemed to dissipate into the mist, replaced by a cold, burning clarity. She was standing where her mother had fought for her life, and she refused to let that sacrifice be forgotten.

They descended the rusted iron maintenance stairs attached to the outer pylon, stepping onto a narrow concrete ledge that overhung the riverbank. The heavy steel door of the maintenance shed was secured by a modern electronic keypad, its small red LED light blinking rhythmically in the damp morning air. Elena knelt before the keypad, pulling a small electronic decryption device from her pocket and plugging it into a hidden diagnostic port beneath the buttons.

"Julian changed the access code after the acquisition," Elena muttered, her fingers flying across the makeshift keypad with practiced speed as lines of green code scrolled across her portable screen. "Give me thirty seconds."

Above them, the distinct crunch of gravel on the bridge overhead broke the silence of the morning. Footsteps approached the top of the maintenance stairs, heavy and deliberate. A familiar voice cut through the damp air, echoing off the concrete pillars with chilling calmness.

"I knew you'd come back to the scene of the crime, Hannah," Julian called out, his footsteps beginning their slow descent down the iron stairs. "Family sentimentality is such a predictable weakness."
