Chapter 11: Through the Drainage Tunnel

The drainage tunnel was narrow, pitch black, and reeked of stagnant water and industrial runoff. Hannah dropped to her hands and knees, clutching the heavy leather briefcase tightly against her chest as she crawled into the claustrophobic space. Behind her, the deafening crash of the maintenance shed door giving way echoed down the concrete conduit, followed by Julian’s furious shouts. She pushed herself forward with desperate energy, ignoring the sharp stones cutting into her palms and the damp chill soaking through the fabric of her light blue dress.

The tunnel sloped upward gradually, the stale air slowly giving way to a faint, metallic draft that hinted at the street above. Hannah crawled as fast as her newly healed legs and bruised arms would allow, her mind replaying every moment of the confrontation at the pylon. She realized that Elena had deliberately sacrificed her own escape to buy precious seconds, ensuring the evidence would reach the authorities. That profound selflessness stood in stark, blinding contrast to Julian’s calculating greed, fueling a fierce, unyielding determination to see justice served.

After what felt like an eternity of agonizing physical exertion, a square patch of gray morning light appeared ahead of her, blocked by a rusted iron security grate. Hannah reached the end of the conduit, dropping the briefcase for a second to push against the heavy grid with both hands. With a sharp groan of protest, the rusted hinges gave way, and the grate clattered outward onto the concrete floor of a secure police department parking garage.

Hannah scrambled out of the opening, coughing as she breathed in the fresh, exhaust-filled air of the downtown precinct. She stood up unsteadily on her trembling legs, clutching the leather briefcase to her side, and ran toward the brightly lit glass doors of the station lobby. Several uniformed officers stepped out from the reception desk, looking with astonishment at the young woman in the mud-stained light blue dress who burst through the doors demanding to speak with the chief of detectives immediately.

"I need to report a murder and corporate embezzlement," Hannah said, her voice ringing clear and authoritative across the bustling lobby, commanding the immediate attention of every officer in the room. "My name is Hannah Carter, and I have the evidence against Julian Vance."

Within minutes, Hannah was ushered into a quiet, secure interview room on the second floor, flanked by Detective Miller, a seasoned investigator with sharp gray eyes and an air of weary integrity. She placed the heavy leather briefcase on the metal interrogation table and popped open the latches, revealing the notarized confession, the financial ledgers, and the recorded magnetic tapes. Miller listened in absolute silence as Hannah recounted the poisoning, the fraudulent corporate takeover, and the tragic events of the night on Ashwood Bridge.

"If this confession and these ledgers are authentic, we have more than enough probable cause to issue an immediate arrest warrant and freeze all corporate assets," Detective Miller said, closing the briefcase gently. He looked at Hannah with deep, unexpected respect. "We need to move on his estate and the warehouse immediately. Where is the woman who helped you escape?"

"She's still at the pylon," Hannah said, a cold spike of panic piercing her chest. "Julian was right behind us. We have to go back for her right now."
