Chapter 10: The Hidden Vault

The interior of the maintenance shed was pitch black, smelling of damp earth, rust, and old paper. Elena fumbled in her pocket for her heavy-duty flashlight, clicking it on to reveal a cramped concrete room lined with steel filing cabinets and a heavy, bank-style vault door set into the back wall. The heavy steel door of the shed shuddered violently as Julian slammed his weight against the outside, shouting muffled threats and demanding they open up before he forced the hinges.

"He'll break the lock within two minutes," Elena said, rushing over to the heavy vault door and examining its intricate combination dial. "Your mother gave you the combination on the night of the accident, Hannah. Think back. It was the date of your parents' anniversary combined with your birth weight."

Hannah closed her eyes, shutting out the sound of Julian pounding against the exterior door. Her mind raced back through the fog of trauma, filtering out the fear until a sequence of numbers materialized in her consciousness with crystalline clarity. She stepped past Elena, placed her hand on the cold brass dial, and began turning it with practiced precision. Left to forty-two, right to eighteen, left to seven, and right to ninety-five. With a satisfying mechanical clunk, the heavy locking mechanism disengaged.

She pulled the thick steel door open, revealing a brightly lit interior compartment lined with rows of safety deposit boxes and archival storage containers. Elena swept her flashlight beam across the shelves until it illuminated a large leather briefcase resting on the central table. Hannah approached the briefcase and flipped open the brass latches. Inside lay original signed deeds, video recordings on magnetic tape, and a notarized confession signed by Julian Vance himself, detailing the embezzlement scheme and the events of the night on Ashwood Bridge.

"We have everything we need," Hannah whispered, lifting the heavy briefcase out of the vault.

Outside the shed, the frantic pounding suddenly stopped. A heavy, terrifying silence fell over the exterior door. A moment later, the distinct screech of a crowbar jamming into the frame echoed through the small concrete room. Julian was no longer trying to negotiate; he was coming in with whatever tools he could find, determined to destroy the evidence and silence them permanently before they could reach the authorities.

"There's an emergency drainage tunnel at the back of the vault," Elena said, pointing a trembling finger toward a low iron grate near the floor. "It leads directly to the police precinct three blocks away. Go, Hannah! I'll hold him here."

"I'm not leaving you," Hannah said firmly, slamming the briefcase shut.

"You have to," Elena insisted, pushing the heavy metal grate aside with a sharp metallic clatter. "You are the only one who can deliver the evidence. If Julian takes that briefcase, your mother's sacrifice means nothing. Go, Hannah. I will be right behind you."
